Hamburg account

Shklovsky V.B.
Shklovsky V.B.

Phraseologism: Hamburg account.

Meaning: About the evaluation of something without discounts and concessions, with the utmost exactingness.

Origin: From a collection of critical articles by V. Shklovsky called "The Hamburg Account" (1928). In the preface, Shklovsky wrote that he had heard the expression "according to the Hamburg account" from a former wrestler. The wrestlers allegedly gathered in Hamburg and held a closed tournament to find out the true strength of each. But, apparently, the "Hamburg account" is Shklovsky's own expression. According to the assumption of L. I. Skvortsov ("Questions of the culture of speech", 1965, issue 6), the expression "by and large" arose from here.

Random phraseology:

From great to ridiculous one step.

Meaning:

1. Serious, important often alternates with funny. 2. It's easy to go from one extreme to another.

Origin:

The expression is a tracing-paper from the French Du sublime au ridicule il n "ya qu" un pas. This phrase was often repeated by Napoleon during his flight from Russia in 1812 to his ambassador in Warsaw de Pradt, who told about it in the book "History of the Embassy to the Grand Duchy of Warsaw" (1816). Its primary source is the expression of the French writer J. F. Marmontel (1723-1799): "In general, the funny comes into contact with the great."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Portable charger for electric vehicles 03.01.2016

The Norwegian company Zaptec has developed the first portable charger for electric vehicles. A small unit, similar to a laptop battery, can be charged from a regular home electrical outlet, and then taken with you to recharge your car anywhere and at any time. The ESA website tells about the development.

The charger is one of the technologies created under the Technology Transfer Program of the European Space Agency (ESA). In particular, the Zaptec company is engaged in the creation of tools for soil sampling of Mars, the Moon and asteroids, and the technologies created in the process of this work are also adapted for "terrestrial" purposes. While working on a drill for drilling in space, engineers developed technology that proved very useful for designing an electric vehicle charger.

Since conventional drills with a rotary bit are ineffective for drilling in space, the company had the task of developing a new method. It was decided to use plasma as a cutting edge. Then the question arose of supplying the instrument with energy, because in flight conditions, for example, to Mars, the possibilities are extremely limited - only 100 watts, solar energy and small batteries. Then the engineers designed a small transformer that is charged from a low-power network, and then can power the tool.

It is this technology that was used in the described charger - due to its low power consumption, it can be connected to a conventional, household electrical outlet, and then put in the trunk, going on a long journey.
