Phraseologism: The power of darkness.
Meaning: Aggressive ignorance and cultural backwardness
Origin: Bible expression. The Gospel of Luke (22:53) contains the words of Jesus Christ addressed to those who came to take him into custody: "Every day I was with you in the temple, and you did not raise your hands against Me, but now is your time and power darkness." The expression gained great popularity after the appearance of the drama by L. Tolstoy "The Power of Darkness, or the Claw got stuck - the whole bird is abyss" (1886), which quickly began to be called briefly: "The Power of Darkness". In accordance with the content of the play, which describes the way of life in the Russian village, this expression has become a symbol of aggressive ignorance and cultural backwardness. The title of this play prompted the well-known journalist and wit of his time Vladimir Gilyarovsky (1853-1935) to write (1886) the famous impromptu: "There are two misfortunes in Russia: // Below - the power of darkness. // And above - the darkness of power."
