Devil's Advocate

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: Devil's Advocate.

Meaning: About a person who loves to swear at someone else, who tries to find flaws in good things (book irony).

Origin: This expression dates back to the Middle Ages. The Latin words advocatus diaboli were used to refer to a participant in a theological dispute who, in a dispute, acted as an opponent of a theologian who sought to prove a certain position (for example, during the canonization of a saint). The "Devil's Advocate" raised objections as if on behalf of the enemy of the human race. Thus, the theologian had to demonstrate the ability to conduct a discussion with the most unfriendly and well-prepared opponent.

Random phraseology:

Olympus.

Meaning:

Elite, a collection of people who became classics during their lifetime - "literary Olympus", "musical Olympus", etc.

Origin:

A mountain in Greece, on which, as Homer says (in the Iliad), "immortal gods" and heroes lived there, taken there by the gods for their exploits. Later Greek and Roman writers (Sophocles, Aristotle, Virgil) already placed the gods in heaven and called Olympus the firmament where the gods live.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. flying snail 17.03.2012

The small land snail Tornatellides boeningi, feeding on the leaves of trees on one of the Japanese islands, spreads through the air. The birds pecking at her help her in this.

Shinichiro Wada, a graduate student in the Department of Zoology at Tohoku University, fed snails to birds and found that about 15% of mollusks pass through the bird's intestinal tract undigested. They come out with droppings in half an hour, or even in two hours, during which time the bird often manages to fly quite far.

Apparently, the swallowed snail hides entirely in the shell for the duration of the flight and closes the shell opening with a special cap and mucous plug, as many of its relatives do under adverse conditions.
