Phraseologism: Great combinator.

Meaning: 1. About an energetic, enterprising, businesslike, inventive person (jokingly ironic). 2. About a rogue, a swindler, a deceiver (disapproved).

Origin: The title of a chapter in the novel The Golden Calf (1931) by Soviet writers Ilya Ilf (1897-1937) and Yevgeny Petrov (1903-1942). The authors wanted to call the novel itself that way, but settled on the "Golden Calf" variant, meaning the legendary golden calf, symbolizing the desire of Ostap Bender, the protagonist of the novel, to enrich himself. The history of the creation of the novel was told by the famous Soviet writer Valentin Kataev (brother of E. P. Petrov) in his memoir novel "My Diamond Crown" (1978). The prototype of Ostap Bender was, according to Kataev, an employee of the Odessa Criminal Investigation Department Osip Veniaminovich Shor (1897-1979), or Ostap, as his friends and relatives called him. Everyone who knew Ostap spoke of him as an intelligent, kind and determined truth-lover who had a wonderful sense of humor, considerable height (1 m 90 cm) and physical strength.
