What will Marya Aleksevna say?

Griboyedov A.S.
Griboyedov A.S.

Phraseologism: What will Marya Aleksevna say?

Meaning: The phrase is a symbol of sanctimonious, philistine dependence on the opinions of others (ironic).

Origin: The original source is the comedy "Woe from Wit" (1824) by L. S. Griboyedov (1795-1829). Famusov's words are the final phrase of the play (act. 4, yavl. 15): "Oh, my God! What will Princess Marya Aleksevna say?" Literary critics note a parallel with one of the plays by the English playwright T. Morton (1769-1838). In his comedy (1798) "Speed the plough" (literally "Push the plow") one of the characters asks: "What will Mrs. Grundy say?" That is, "What will Mrs. Grandy say?"

Random phraseology:

For the Kudykin mountains.

Meaning:

Very far.

Origin:

The appearance of such a phraseological combination is associated with the long traditions of our ancestors. Then in the domestic open spaces there were a lot of harmful evil spirits, which especially annoyed travelers. Therefore, going on the road, to the question of good neighbors: "Where?" we tried not to give a specific answer in order to avoid the evil eye and not spoil our trip. Hence - the same type of saying: "Do not cackle, there will be no way (happiness)." The etymology of the word, at first glance, is quite transparent: from the adverb "kudy" ("where"). In addition to the combination with the noun "mountains", there are also expressions "on the Kudykin island" and "on the Kudykino field". From the curious adverb, other words are also formed: "kudykat" - "to ask the traveler about where he is going" and "kudyka" - "a person who asks the counter an idle question" where? It is also associated with ancient beliefs, the way of life of the Russians, and defines "Kudykiny Gory" as an elevated place where wizards lived. Our great-grandfathers went to them for advice, help in difficult times. The expression "Do not cackle, there will be no way (happiness)" correlate with the old word "kud", which denoted "evil spirit". It could be called if you ask a stupid question to a walking person. There is also a geographical version of the formation of the phraseological combination "kudykiny mountains". In the Moscow region, there are still two villages - Kudykino and Gora, located in the neighborhood.Earlier, from about 1637-47, there was one administrative point here - the village of Kudykina Gora, which in the middle of the last century was divided in two along the Lyutikhe River. ykiny mountains exist in reality. This is a low ridge in the Crimean Dvuhyakornaya valley, which is located near Feodosia. The real Kudykiny mountains are known for the fact that during the Middle Ages there was a monastery of John the Baptist and an Armenian-Kipchak fortress, which were subsequently destroyed.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
