The darker the night, the brighter the stars
Pushkin A.S.
Phraseologism: The darker the night, the brighter the stars.
Meaning: In difficult times, talented people are most valuable.
Origin: From the poem "Don't Say..." (1882) by Apollon Nikolaevich Maikov (1821-1897): "Don't say that there is no salvation // That you are exhausted in sorrow: // The darker the night, the brighter the stars..." A. N. Maykov's poem "Don't Say..." is included in the cycle of his poems of the 80s, known as "From Apollodorus the Gnostic". As for this Apollodorus the Gnostic, the translations of which were allegedly made by A.N. Maikov, here is what the poet himself wrote about this character in the collection "Russian Antiquity" (1899): "Apollodorus the Gnostic is my invention ... I leave many in error (even philologists) that there is such a poet of the second century. Similar images, which are based on biblical lines, are also found in other Russian poets. For example, the poet of Pushkin's time, Pavel Katenin (Sonnet, 1835): "The thicker the darkness around, the brighter the shine of the star."
Random phraseology:
Not at ease.
Meaning:
Feel uncomfortable.
Origin:
Not at ease - this is a literal, but not corresponding to the meaning of the original translation from the French n'est pas dans son assiette - "not in the spirit, not in the mood." The word assiette means in French "mood, state of mind", as well as "plate". |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
