flower coffee

German
German

Phraseologism: Flower coffee.

Meaning: About a thing done in bad faith out of poverty or stinginess.

Origin: This is an idiom used in Germany to refer to very weak coffee. The expression appeared in Saxony, thanks to the floral pattern typical of the Biedermeier era that appeared back in 1815 on the bottom of a cup of Meissen porcelain, usually these were roses, forget-me-nots, cornflowers, violets. If a flower peeps through the bottom of a full cup of coffee, the coffee is considered weak, "flowery". The contradiction between expensive master's china and savings on coffee for guests was regarded as stinginess.

Random phraseology:

Many are called, but few are chosen.

Meaning:

1. About many applicants for something that only a few who are truly worthy will get. 2. About a business that many are engaged in, but only truly talented people, real masters, achieve success.

Origin:

From the Bible. Gospel of Matthew (20:16): "So the last will be first, and the first last, for many are called, but few are chosen."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. If left untreated, the disease will disappear 05.08.2002

A study conducted by Italian geneticists and doctors in Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta) led to curious results.

Among the Mossi people living here, malaria is not very common, although there are enough malarial mosquitoes around. It turns out that many representatives of this tribe are carriers of a special gene that makes hemoglobin inedible for malarial plasmodium.

Those people who have this gene in duplicate (received from both father and mother) are almost 100 percent protected from malaria. Those who have a protective gene inherited from only one side, sometimes still get sick. And finally, those few Mossi who do not have a special gene at all are quite susceptible to malaria.

Researchers believe that the existing cases of malaria in Burkina Faso are largely due to the fact that it is being treated with effective modern drugs. If there was no treatment, after some time those who did not have a protective gene would simply die out.
