Freebie

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: Freebie.

Meaning: Darmovshchina.

Origin: The student's favorite word "freebie" comes from shoes! A freebie used to be called the top of a boot. The lower part of the boot - the head - wore out much faster than the shaft - a freebie. Enterprising shoemakers took old tops and sewed new heads on them. Such boots - sewn "for free" - were much cheaper than new ones.

Random phraseology:

Weave (fence) wattle.

Meaning:

To talk nonsense, talk nonsense (disapproved).

Origin:

Initially, the combination "to weave a wattle fence" and "to fence a wattle fence" was used in the direct meaning of "connecting, twisting rods, making a fence." The figurative meaning was formulated on the basis of the similarity between the manufacture of a wattle fence and monotonous, sluggish speech.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Overcome alcoholism and gambling 19.03.2017

A new method of combating alcoholism and gambling was discovered by the staff of the Imperial College London. The essence of the method is to influence the reward system of the human brain, the scientists said.

Researchers conducted observations on people who were treated for alcoholism. By regularly scanning the brains of the participants in the experiment, scientists found that drugs for alcoholism blunted the “gambler syndrome”, which promotes recovery.

As the experts explained, the drug that the volunteers took (Nelmefen) made the feeling of reward inactive. The drug helped to get rid of the feeling of anticipation of the game or drinking alcohol. It helped people cope with addiction to alcohol and games.

Currently, researchers are aiming to study this mechanism in more detail, which will help develop new treatments.

Yuri Fedorovich
The word Freebie in the meaning of “to take without asking, to receive without paying”, most likely came from the name of the theologian Freebie, a Bursat comrade of the protagonist of N.V. Gogol’s story “Viy”. The author characterizes him as follows: "... had an extremely strange disposition: everything that lay, happened to be near him, he would certainly steal." Arriving at the farm “... the theologian has already managed to pick up a whole crucian carp from the cart. And since he didn’t do it out of any self-interest, but only out of habit, and, having completely forgotten about his carp, he was already looking at what to pull off another, not having the intention to miss even a broken wheel. It should be noted that Gogol did not give his characters names corresponding to their character traits. On the contrary, their names eventually became household names: Derzhimorda (gendarme from the Inspector), Akaki Akakievich, Plyushkin, Manilovshchina. Moreover, the word Freebie before Gogol's time was not used in the indicated meaning, as evidenced by its interpretation in the Dahl Dictionary.
