Phraseologism: Mickey Mouse Degrees.

Meaning: To refer to an invalid and low quality university education or qualification obtained.

Origin: The concept was used by UK Minister of Education Margaret Hodge during a discussion about the expansion of higher education. She defined a Mickey Mouse course as "one where the content is perhaps not as intense as expected and therefore the degree itself does not have much value in the job market" and also pointed out that "simply replicating Mickey Mouse courses is not may be acceptable." Such an opinion often arises during the summer period when the final assessment is carried out and new training courses are presented to the public. The phrase gained widespread currency in the late 1990s, as the Labor government set itself the goal of achieving 50% of students in higher education by 2010. Hodge contrasted Mickey Mouse courses with a four-year Bachelor of Arts course (classical languages and philosophy) at Oxford University, which is the final assessment of students.
