Non-commissioned Officer Widow

Gogol N.V.
Gogol N.V.

Phraseologism: Non-commissioned widow.

Meaning: About an imprudent person who, as a result of his rash actions, punished himself, that is, "flogged himself" (iron.).

Origin: From the play "The Government Inspector" (1836) by N. V. Gogol (1809-1852). In it, the Governor says to Khlestakov (act. 4, yavl. 15): "The non-commissioned officer lied to you, as if I whipped her, she's lying, by God she's lying. She whipped herself." Although in this case it is the shameless lie of Gorodnichiy, whose arbitrariness was the non-commissioned officer's widow, that is remarkable, nevertheless this phrase - due to its obvious paradoxical nature - has become widely used, and precisely in the sense that Gorodnichiy puts into it.

Random phraseology:

Rest from deeds (works).

Meaning:

Stop doing any activity, go on vacation (bookish, sometimes joking).

Origin:

From the Bible. It says that God, having created the world and man in six days, on the seventh day "rested from all His works" (Old Testament, Genesis, 2:3). The tradition of God resting on the seventh day of the week formed the basis of a well-known tradition among Orthodox Jews: they consider the seventh day of the week, which falls on Saturday, to be festive. This day, when even the lightest work is unacceptable, must be devoted only to prayers and other activities befitting a holiday.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Microprocessors based on ternary code for the Internet of things 24.11.2016

Scientists from South Korea's Sungkyunkwan University have developed a technology for semiconductors that operate in the ternary number system - a positional number system with an integer base of three. It is more capacious than the binary system in which modern computing devices operate today.

Another feature of the development, according to team leader Park Jin-Hong (Park Jin-hong), was the use of "negative differential resistance." This is a property of individual elements or nodes of electrical circuits, manifested in the appearance on the current-voltage characteristic of a section where the voltage decreases with increasing current.

In their work, South Korean scientists used an allotropic modification of phosphorus (phosphorene) and rhenium disulfide (ReS2). Unlike binary-based semiconductors, their development is more energy efficient, requires much less power, and will run faster, the scientists say.

This will eventually lead to the development of new energy-saving schemes that will be used in IoT devices and other industries associated with the processing of large amounts of data. Recall that, according to Gartner analysts, the number of IoT points worldwide will reach 2020 billion by 21. According to the Genpact Research Institute, $2030 trillion will be invested in the industrial Internet of Things by 60. These figures encourage developers to actively develop new technologies for this industry.
