Pull the gimp

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: Pull the gimp

Meaning: To procrastinate, to drag out any business, to speak monotonously and tediously.

Origin: Gimp - the thinnest gold, silver or copper thread, which was used to embroider galloons, aiguillettes and other decorations of officer uniforms, as well as chasubles of priests and simply rich costumes. It was made in a handicraft way, by heating the metal and carefully pulling out a thin wire with tongs. This process was extremely long, slow and painstaking, so that over time the expression "pull the wire" began to refer to any protracted and monotonous business or conversation.

Random phraseology:

Take / take on a pencil something.

Meaning:

To make a note, a note for memory, write something down (publ.).

Origin:

The expression arose among journalists, reporters, writers who, by the nature of their activities, quickly record their life observations. Brief notes at the place of observation of any events serve as material for further work. It is also assumed that the expression is formed by strengthening the figurative basis of the word note in the turnover to take note and replacing it with a specific one - a pencil.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

New RECOM pulse converters with increased output current 09.04.2021

RECOM has increased the rated output current range of RPMH non-isolated switching products from 0,5A to 1,5A while maintaining their dimensions thanks to 3D Power Packaging technology. The new high efficiency converters are available in miniature packages measuring 12,19 x 12,19 x 3,75 mm and have output voltages of 3,3; 5; 12; 15 and 24 V adjustable. The input voltage is up to 60V and the operating temperature can reach 100°C or even higher at reduced power.

The converters have the functions of remote control of turning on and off, regulation of the output voltage and monitoring its level, as well as protection against short circuit at the output, overcurrent and overvoltage. The series complies with EN55032 class B EMC requirements when using an external filter.

RECOM's 3D Power Packaging technology has placed the RPMH-1.5 in a 25-pin LGA package with hex shielding to optimize EMC and thermal performance. The RPMH-1.5-EVM-1 development board is available to test the performance and all functions of the converters.

A threefold increase in the output current of the converters greatly expands the range of their use, in addition, a wide input voltage range up to 60 V is especially valuable in systems with a power supply of 48 V and in on-board automotive equipment, where power surges can occur.
