thirty pieces of silver

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: Thirty pieces of silver.

Meaning: Symbol of the price of betrayal (contempt.).

Origin: From the Bible. The New Testament (Matthew 26:14-16) says that Judas received thirty pieces of silver for betraying Jesus: “Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said: whatever you give me, I will betray you.” Him? They offered him thirty pieces of silver, and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to betray Him."

Random phraseology:

Truly Russian beginnings.

Meaning:

Orthodoxy, autocracy, nationality.

Origin:

From the report (1828) of the Minister of Public Education Sergei Semyonovich Uvarov (1786-1855) to the Russian Emperor Nicholas I. In this report, the minister proposed his measures to change the university charter (which he considered unnecessarily "liberal") and the restructuring of all higher education in Russia to, as he put it, "truly Russian principles." These beginnings meant a well-known ideological triad - Orthodoxy, autocracy, nationality.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Challenging hobbies help rejuvenate the brain 28.01.2016

Elderly people are often advised to be active and find a hobby to help protect their mental faculties from fading. However, not every activity and not every hobby is suitable here. According to a study by scientists at the University of Texas at Dallas, it is better for older people to do something that requires a lot of mental effort to preserve cognitive functions.

The experiment involved several dozen volunteers from 60 to 90 years old, who for fourteen weeks, fifteen hours a week, gave either digital photography, or quilting - sewing quilted patchwork things, or traveling together or cooking together. The first two hobbies - photography and quilting - were quite difficult and required some effort to master them, traveling and cooking involved an active social life, but there was nothing much to learn there. Finally, participants from the third group of the experiment simply listened to music, watched the classics of world cinema, or had fun with some simple games. All of them before and after the 14-week period underwent special tests for the state of cognitive abilities, and their brains were scanned in magnetic resonance imaging; the same tests and tomography were repeated a year later.

As our readers might have guessed, those older people who had to engage in complex hobbies performed better: in memory tests after a period of “training”, they showed higher results, and MRI showed that their brain retains high plasticity in those areas. cortex, which is responsible for attention and semantic analysis.

For example, if a person was faced with a simple statement, the brain in the corresponding areas was activated weakly, but if the language task was difficult, then cortical activity also increased. Such an adjustment of resources to a task is a common thing in youth, but with age, the brain begins to respond to any task with the same tension (as, by the way, this happened to all volunteers before the experiment). That is, complex activities that require a person to learn something, to some extent preserve - or return - the youth of the brain. And just enjoying the beautiful or just actively communicating with others will not be enough here.
