The music department was found in the brain

26.12.2015

We can easily distinguish music from speech or, for example, from the sound of footsteps by ear. But does this mean that there are special areas in our brain tuned specifically to the sounds of music, or does the musical zones actually combine several functions, and music recognition is just one of them? Neuroscientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology argue that the first is true - there are indeed neurons in the auditory cortex dedicated to musical information.

The experiment involved 10 people who listened to a variety of things: music, and speech, and telephone calls, and the noise of a passing car, etc. The listener's brain was scanned in a magnetic resonance groups of cells. The limit of functional MRI is hundreds of thousands or millions of neurons, and if, for example, differences in activity occur in two adjacent cell clusters, each of which has 500 thousand neurons, then fMRI will see this, but if there are 10 thousand, or a thousand cells, then no longer, these zones will merge into one, even if their activity will be very different.

However, this time the researchers managed to find a way out with the help of improved fMRI data processing, which made it possible to distinguish relatively small (tens of thousands) groups of neurons. As a result, six groups of cells were found in the auditory cortex, which were characterized by sound specialization, that is, they predominantly responded to sounds of a certain kind or a certain characteristic of sound. One of the groups turned out to be musical, the other - speech, the rest tracked the general acoustic parameters (height and frequency).

The cerebral cortex responsible for the perception of sounds is very heterogeneous in function, and the authors of the work emphasize that the speech and musical groups of neurons did not intersect with the primary auditory cortex, while the other four found neural clusters just overlapped with it. The primary auditory cortex is the first "instance" to which the signal comes from the receptors in the inner ear. Here, the most common acoustic features are analyzed, the same frequency and pitch, and therefore, obviously, neurons specializing in such parameters are turned on at the first stages of sound information processing.

But to define a sound as speech or music, more complex, abstract work is required. It must be emphasized that here we are talking specifically about the sounds of music and speech, and, for example, there are other sections in the cortex for a meaningful analysis of what was said, just like the emotions that we experience from our favorite song can be seen in special emotional centers. And the musical neural group, which we managed to identify, most likely works in the closest connection with emotional and cognitive centers, so that a specialized response to music arises in it, among other things, as a result of signals that came from other "departments".

In the future, the researchers want to find out if there is an even more detailed specialization in the found group of cells, that is, whether there are neurons of melody, rhythm, etc. But here everything depends on whether it will be possible to further increase the resolution of neurobiological methods.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Titanosaurs - the largest animals in Earth's history 01.04.2024

For a long time, titanosaurs remained a mystery and one of the most amazing phenomena in the history of the animal world. Their enormous size and amazing features arouse the interest of scientists and the curiosity of the general public.

Titanosaurs, which even included the largest known dinosaur, Patagotitan, left behind a majestic legacy in the history of the planet. From their small eggs began the life of these colossal creatures, whose growth took place before the eyes of their contemporaries.

Interestingly, titanosaurs led a varied lifestyle and had a wide diet. From fossilized eggs to coprolites, all this demonstrates the versatility of their behavior and adaptability to different conditions.

However, despite their gigantic size and power, titanosaurs also suffered the fate of other dinosaurs, disappearing after a catastrophic asteroid collision. This reminds us of the fragility of even the strongest species before the forces of nature.

Titanosaurs are amazing creatures that flourished on Earth millions of years ago. Their history is filled with secrets and mysteries, which we are gradually revealing thanks to new scientific discoveries.
