Fear for the Jews

Phraseologism: Fear for the sake of the Jews.
Meaning: Out of fear for their safety, out of fear of the authorities.
Origin: From the Bible (Church Slavonic text). The New Testament (Gospel of John, 19:38) tells of Joseph of Arimathea, who, out of fear of the Jews ("fear for the sake of the Jews"), hid that he was a disciple of Jesus. Russian translation of the 38th verse: "After this, Joseph of Arimathea, a disciple of Jesus, but secret - out of fear from the Jews, asked Pilate to remove the body of Jesus, and Pilate allowed. He went and removed the body of Jesus."

The original source is the Bible.
