Sitting at the same table with the Philistines

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: To sit at the same table with the Philistines.

Meaning: About ideological, political conciliation, unacceptable compromise (disapproved). V. G. Belinsky in one of his letters: "I am a Jew by nature and cannot sit at the same table with the Philistines."

Origin: From the Bible. The Philistines are a Canaanite tribe that lived in Palestine and gave it its name. The word "Philistines" in Hebrew sounds like "Pelishtim". This tribe has long been at enmity with their Israeli neighbors, for whom it was almost impossible to sit at the same table with their enemies - this would mean a betrayal of the interests of the people of Israel.

Random phraseology:

Kochubey is rich and famous.

Meaning:

Wealth, prosperity (iron., joke.).

Origin:

A quote from A. S. Pushkin's poem "Poltava" (1829) song I: "Kochubey is rich and glorious, // His meadows are boundless, // There herds of his horses // Graze freely, unguarded. // Farms around Poltava // Surrounded his gardens, // And he has a lot of good, // Furs, satin, silver // And in plain sight and under locks ... Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Superluminal UFO 08.02.2012

Something strange is going on in the nearby Cigar Galaxy (aka M82). According to one of the authors of the discovery, British astrophysicist Tom Maxlow from the Astrophysical Center at Jodrel Bank, back in May last year, while observing the explosion of a Supernova (SN2008iz) in this galaxy, scientists, using the MERLIN radio telescope network, discovered that from its central part began receive radio signals unlike anything they have ever been able to detect in space.

The bright spot of radio emission lasted only a few days, then sharply reduced its brightness, but still did not disappear from view and did not change the spectrum. According to scientists, this is unlikely to be a trace of a supernova, since it usually has a different emission spectrum. In addition, the transverse velocity of the source discovered by scientists is four times the speed of light.

However, physicists do not betray this phenomenon and call it an "optical illusion". According to them, this can be observed if a gas jet rushes at them at a small angle, heated by a black hole and accelerated to a sufficiently high speed. Under these conditions, they say, the effects of the theory of relativity come into play, and it seems to us that the object moves with a transverse velocity exceeding the speed of light.

However, the explanation of scientists does not fit into the real picture. Despite the fact that the Cigar Galaxy is similar to ours, there is no black hole at the center of it. All three of its black holes are not in the center, and where the strange signal comes from, there is no black hole. It was assumed that the superluminal effect was caused by a certain microquasar. That would be a good explanation, but there is nothing like a microquasar, they should shine brighter, and besides, microquasars should emit powerful X-rays, which this object does not emit. "So we don't know what it is," says Tom Maxlow.

Galaxy M82 is located in Ursa Major, 12 million light-years from Earth. Like ours, it is a spiral galaxy, but half the size. Its distinguishing feature is the explosive birth of massive stars.
