Phraseologism: Seven spans in the forehead.

Meaning: About a very smart person.

Origin: The expression arose on the basis of phrenological ideas that one can judge the mental abilities of a person by the height of the forehead. The ancient measure of the length of the span was equal to the distance between the ends of the stretched thumb and forefinger (smaller span) or the thumb and middle fingers (large span). The expression is based on hyperbole, since a man with seven spans in his forehead would have to have a forehead about one and a half meters high.
