Seventh water on a jelly

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: The seventh water on a kissel.

Meaning: About a person who is in an extremely distant relationship with someone.

Origin: The origin of this turnover is associated with the manufacture of jelly, which is a liquid gelatinous mass. If the jelly is standing for a long time, then it loses its taste and a layer of water appears on it. The seventh water is the water that has appeared on the jelly that has stood for a long time for the seventh time, which is why its taste has nothing to do with jelly. The numeral seven is used here in a generalized symbolic way, as in other Russian proverbs and sayings, so it varies. The tenth water on jelly option is also possible.

Random phraseology:

Piece of paper.

Meaning:

About a document that someone considers legally null and void (jokingly ironic).

Origin:

From German: Ein Fetzen Papier (Papierfetzen). The words of the German Reich Chancellor (1909-1917) Theobald Bethmap-Hollweg (1856-1921), who (August 4, 1914) in a conversation with the British Ambassador Eduard Goschen called the international treaty that guaranteed the neutrality of Belgium. The reason for the conversation was the events of the beginning of the First World War: on August 3, 1914, German troops invaded Belgium - in violation of their own obligations. The next day, Great Britain presented Germany with an ultimatum: if the German side did not withdraw troops from neutral Belgium, Great Britain would start a war against Germany. In the evening of the same day, the British Ambassador E. Goshen came to the German Chancellor Bethmann-Hollweg for an answer to the ultimatum and heard a firm "no". He recalled the treaty that Germany had signed and which she promised to abide by. Then the words that went down in history sounded. The Chancellor snapped in annoyance: "So, because of a piece of paper, you intend to go to war with your kindred nation?" To which the ambassador remarked: "Yes, but this scrap is signed by England ..." The war became inevitable. On the night of August 4-5, Great Britain declared war on Germany. On the 8th of the same month, Edward Goshen sent to London a report on his conversation with the Chancellor, mentioning in particular the "scrap of paper." Later, this expression was included in the "blue book", which was released by the British government to present its position in this war to the world and the public. The words were picked up by the press of the Entente countries and became widely known as a symbol of a cynical attitude towards international treaties and international law in general.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Rigid steel and composite glass sails 03.09.2023

Cargill is piloting the WindWings rigid sail system, constructed from steel and composite glass, aboard the Pyxis Ocean.

The Pyxis Ocean, built by the Mitsubishi Corporation shipyard and leased by Cargill, was the first pilot vessel to implement the WindWings system - two rigid sails up to 37,5 meters high. These sails, created by the Norwegian firm Yara Marine Technologies, are an innovative solution that can enable various types of ships, such as bulk carriers and tankers, to reduce fuel consumption by 30% by using wind energy and optimizing sailing routes. In addition, the use of this technology will reduce emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere from cargo ships by at least 30%.

In the future, vertical rigid sails up to 45 meters high can be installed on cargo ships.

The installation of the sail system on the Pyxis Ocean was carried out by the Chinese shipyard COSCO.

BAR Technologies and Yara Marine Technologies joined forces to create hundreds of these rigid sails over the course of four years. There is also active development of new designs with improved hydrodynamic shape that will further advance the performance and sustainability of this innovative technology in marine environments.
