In addition to smartphones with next-generation foldable screens and an entirely new form factor, the tech giant Samsung is reportedly working on even more flexible displays right now. The company said that as part of its latest discovery, it has developed another on-screen OLED display with a built-in heart rate monitor, which in turn can be stretched up to 30 percent. According to Samsung, its technology, which she spoke about, is still in its early stages of development and provides much more accurate heart rate measurements than any wearable device on the market.

The electronics giant is convinced that trials of this truly extraordinary display in the long term could pave the way for the commercialization of stretchable devices with large, high-resolution screens, which the firm expects will sooner or later appear in all types of healthcare products.

A team of researchers from the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, the company's research and development center, has succeeded in creating a wearable device with a flexible screen, which in turn is able to provide stable heart rate measurements even after the screen is stretched to 1000 times its normal length.

The vast majority of all fixed-form devices tend to break or fall apart upon even slight physical impact. And specifically to overcome this really limiting technical hurdle, the researchers decided to replace the plastic used in existing stretchable displays with an elastomer. At its core, it is an advanced material with a high level of elasticity and resilience. Immediately thereafter, the company's researchers changed the molecular composition of the material in order to increase its resistance to heat, as well as to reduce the stress caused by elongation.

The team also used a tensile electrode material that resists deformation in the elastomer region, which, according to researcher Yeonjun Lee, "allowed the gaps and wire electrodes located between the pixels to stretch and contract without deforming the OLED pixels themselves." So, if not in smartphones, then sooner or later such technology will be used in various medical devices.
