Petrel of the Revolution

Maksim Gorky
Maksim Gorky

Phraseologism: The petrel of the revolution.

Meaning: About the leader of the opposition, troublemaker in the team, etc.

Origin: For the first time this expression is found in the illegal leaflet "Land and Freedom" No. 2 (1878) published by the Narodnaya Volya. But it became widely known thanks to Maxim Gorky and his "Song of the Petrel" (1901). After its publication, the image of the Petrel became a symbol of the upcoming revolution. And already at the end of March 1901, the writer Leonid Andreev, in a letter to Maxim Gorky, informed him that an article had appeared in Moscow in which the author of the "Song" himself was called "Petrel". Hence the expression "Petrel of the Revolution", which was often applied to Gorky after the October Revolution of 1917.

Random phraseology:

Bay, listen up!

Meaning:

It is used when they want to oppose the arguments of force with reasonable evidence.

Origin:

The Persian king Xerxes, during the war with Greece, after a series of victories, reached the last defensive line of the Greeks - the Isthmian Isthmus. Between Athens and Sparta there was a disagreement on the question of who to entrust the main command of the fleet. Themistocles, who had great rights as the creator of the Athenian fleet, persuaded the Athenians not to insist on his candidacy, so as not to weaken the defense by internal strife. His rival Spartan Eurybiades was appointed to command the fleet. At the critical moment, he showed indecision. Themistocles rebelled against his intention to retreat before the Persians. "- In public games, punishment is imposed on those who rise without an order," said Eurybiades to Themistocles. “But those who lag behind are never crowned,” said Themistocles. Enraged, Eurybiades wanted to hit him. - Bay, but listen! exclaimed Themistocles. He managed to convince the embarrassed Eurybiades of the correctness of his plan, and he won a naval victory over the Persians at Salamis (480 BC), which decided the outcome of the war in favor of the Greeks (Plutarch, Sayings of Kings and Generals. Themistocles, 3-5) .

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Hiring robots instead of people 25.08.2021

Robot rental firms have emerged in the US. However, medium and small businesses are in no hurry to replace people in production

Small factories often produce limited batches of products, so it is not profitable for them to use robotic labor. Silicon Valley Robotics, which invests in factory automation, confirmed that the development of the industry has been hampered for a long time precisely because of economic considerations. However, now some investors have turned their attention to this market. Industry-leading Tiger Global backed three robotics firms in seven months that offer subscriptions to "innovative workers".

Initialized Capital partner Garry Tan says a combination of better and cheaper computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies, low lending rates and a lack of supply pressures from China are fueling interest in robot subscriptions.

Bob Albert, whose family owns a 105-year-old metal stamping plant in Chicago, happily agreed to an offer to pay a robot less than $10 an hour when the average worker at the plant was paid $20. However, Albert later saw that artificial intelligence does not always make the right decisions, which harms production.

"[Robot] Melvin works 24 hours a day, all three shifts, replacing three full-time operators. This year we had to pay a significant increase due to what is happening in the world. And, fortunately, Melvin did not receive a salary increase. He does not ask for a raise," Tammy Barras, head of a small plastics plant, who began using the robot in early 2020, shared his experience. Entrepreneur leases three robots from Rapid Robotics. Thus, the owner of the plant saves about 180 thousand dollars a year on wages.

Barras, who has 102 employees at the plant, admits that today robots cannot completely replace humans, as they can only perform simple repetitive tasks. For example, take a round plastic cylinder and put the company logo on the desired side of the product.
