Meaning: About heavy rain, downpour (usually ironic).
Origin: From the Bible (Church Slavonic text). The Old Testament speaks of the Flood (Genesis 7:11-12): "All the fountains of the deep were broken up, and the abysses of heaven were opened. And it rained on the earth forty days and fourty nights." Russian text: "... all the fountains of the great abyss burst open, and the windows of heaven were opened, and rain fell on the earth for forty days and forty nights." Specialists from the Danish company Danfoss have synthesized a polymer, the film of which shrinks when an electrical voltage is applied to it and can thereby lift a load or perform other work, for example, open and close valves in pumps and other devices, close and open contacts.
