pompadours

Saltykov-Shchedrin M.E.
Saltykov-Shchedrin M.E.

Phraseologism: Pompadours.

Meaning: A complete type of provincial administrator-tyrant, provincial king, stupefied by power and impunity.

Origin: From the satirical essays "Pompadours and Pompadourses" (1863-1874) by the writer Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889). The expression is also found in his other works - "The History of a City", "Modern Idyll", etc. The word "pompadour" for the writer means a tyrant-administrator who enjoys the patronage of the highest authority and therefore revels in his impunity, and "pompadour" - his wife or favorite. The expressiveness of this word is explained by the fact that it evokes several associations in the mind of the reader - with the capricious mistress of Louis XV, the Marquise de Pompadour, the pomposity of the royal court and with the whims of domestic merchants-tyrants. In the 7th chapter of the essays "Pompadours and Pompadourses" the writer already speaks of "pompadours squared".

Random phraseology:

Meaning:

A miser whose passion for accumulation has taken on a pathological character.

Origin:

The hero of Moliere's comedy "The Miser" (1668).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. In Africa, too, they can build a synchrotron 22.03.2015

There are currently about 50 synchrotrons in the world. With the exception of Antarctica, Africa remains the only continent on Earth where there is still no such installation.

Perhaps this shortcoming will be eliminated soon - in November, an international meeting of scientists will be held at the French European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, during which the construction of the first African synchrotron will be discussed. Synchrotron is one of the most common types of cyclic particle accelerators.

Particles accelerated to high energies in the accelerator will generate X-rays, which scientists are going to use in medical and environmental research. It is planned to spend about 200 million dollars on the construction of the synchrotron, and African researchers intend to launch the installation no earlier than in 10 years.

The construction and operation of the accelerator will be carried out jointly by the countries of Africa, Europe and the United States, in addition, scientists hope that the appearance of a synchrotron in Africa should attract qualified scientific specialists to the continent.
