Bow to what you burned, burn what you worshiped

Clovis I
Clovis I

Phraseologism: Bow to what you burned, burn what you worshipped.

Meaning: About the difficult parting with the past, about changing beliefs, principles, about renegade (ironic).

Origin: From the legend about the founder of the Frankish state, King Clovis (c. 466-511), who converted to Christianity in 496. This act of the king gave rise to the legend that the king, being on the verge of defeat in the battle of Tolbiac, prayed in despair to the "god of Clotilde" (his wife Clotilde was already a Christian, although he himself remained a pagan). Having won this battle, the king finally believed in Christ and accepted the Christian faith. And when the archbishop of Reims Remigius (c. 440-533) performed the rite of baptism over the king, he, according to this legend, said to Clovis: Bow down to what you burned, and burn what you worshiped. This legend was set forth by the Bishop of Tours (the historical region of Gaul in France) and the historian Gregory of Tours (c. 540 - c. 594) in his work (book 2, ch. 21) "History of the Franks" (before 591, first edition 1522 ), which still serves as the main source on the history of the Frankish state of the 1795th-1856th centuries. So, on the basis of this work, the famous French historian Augustin Thierry (1840-1859) wrote his book Tales from the Merovingian Times (1818), which was a huge success in France, and was also well known in Russia. Subsequently, the legend of the baptism of King Clovis was invariably present in every book on the history of France. In Russia, the expression became especially popular after the story "The Noble Nest" (1883) by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev (25-1847) was published. There, one of her heroes (Mikhalevich) reads poetry (ch. XNUMX), written for the novel by Turgenev himself: “I gave myself up to new feelings with all my heart. / Like a child, I became a soul, / And I burned everything that I worshiped, / Bowed everything that was burned. But this idea was often encountered in Russian literature before, for example, in the article "A Look at Russian Literature after the Death of Pushkin" (XNUMX) by the poet Pyotr Vyazemsky. Referring to the state of affairs in French literature in it, he writes that Sainte-Beuve was at one time an admirer of Chateaubriand, but then, having changed his views, he published a book directed against his recent idol. This Russian poet comments as follows: "He burned what he adored before." P. A. Vyazemsky and I. S. Turgenev used the same source of French origin, and the difference between their versions is explained by the fact that they translated the French verb adorer (to adore, worship) differently, which is quite possible due to its ambiguity.

Random phraseology:

Ours is abroad.

Meaning:

About the behavior of Russian tourists abroad (jokingly-iron.).

Origin:

The title of a collection of humorous stories (1890) by humorist and playwright Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin (1841-1906). publisher of the magazine "Shards", where the young A.P. Chekhov collaborated. This collection contains stories that represent the customs of the Russian merchant class. A telegram sent by a company of Leykin travelers from Paris to Moscow gives an idea of how "ours" got acquainted with foreign countries: "At the top of the Eiffel Tower, a Russian samovar was smoking! .."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Malicious bacteria detector 06.07.2014

Ohio-based ProteoSense, a developer and manufacturer of a bacteria detector in food products, has received funding from the Ohio Third Frontier, a local state enterprise support fund, and the Technology Concept Fund, established by the local government in conjunction with Ohio University. The volume of investments amounted to over $100 thousand.

ProteoSense has developed the RapidScan device to screen foods for Salmonella, E. coli and other bacteria that cause intestinal infections, as well as allergens.

RapidScan is comparable in size to a smartphone. To check the product for the presence of a specific bacterium, you must insert the appropriate cartridge into the device, which is supplied with the tester.

The device gives results in a few minutes. Suppliers of the products for which it is intended do not need to contact the laboratory and wait for the results of the standard 3-4 days - with the ProteoSense solution, they can perform the test themselves and quickly.

The technology used by ProteoSense in its device was developed by researchers at the Ohio College of Technology and the Ohio College of Medicine.

The development of ProteoSense will come in handy for the American food industry. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently finalizing new rules that will require farmers, food vendors, and others in the food industry to be able to self-check commodities for dangerous bacteria instantly.
