Plyushkin

Gogol N.V.
Gogol N.V.

Phraseologism: Plushkin.

Meaning: Miser, old man.

Origin: One of the heroes of the poem "Dead Souls" (1842) by N.V. Gogol (1809-1852), obsessed with pathological stinginess, a passion for collecting and storing the most useless things that "it's a pity to throw away." A common noun for people of this type.

Random phraseology:

Send from Pontius to Pilate.

Meaning:

About red tape in business, when one who turns to someone with a question, without giving him an answer, is sent to another.

Origin:

The expression arose from the gospel story (Luke, 23:1-12) about how Jesus, captured by his opponents, was brought to trial by Pontius Pilate, the Roman procurator in Palestine. Pontius Pilate, having learned that Jesus was a native of Galilee, sent him to Herod, who ruled this region. When Jesus refused to answer Herod, he sent him back to Pontius Pilate. The people, accustomed to hearing two words: "Pontius" and "Pilate", perceived them as the names of two persons, while the name of Herod fell out in the popular perception of this gospel story. This is where the expression comes from.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Relationship between changes in women's voices and fertility levels 23.10.2023

Scientists from James Madison University and the University of Florida have conducted interesting studies revealing a connection between changes in a woman's voice and her level of fertility. It turns out that "voice flicker" and "voice tremor" may be key to understanding reproductive status.

Previously, scientists have already discovered that during periods of high fertility, women change their smell and appearance, becoming more attractive to men. Now it turns out that voice can also serve as a signal of reproductive status. To understand this phenomenon in detail, the researchers conducted an experiment involving women aged 17 to 30 years. Participants were asked to record their voices four times a month, and also note the date of the start of menstruation.

Analyzing the records, the scientists identified four groups depending on the level of fertility and the use of contraceptives. The results confirmed that vocal flicker was significantly lower in women during periods of high fertility. The same trend was observed for “vocal tremors”. Both aspects gave the impression of a healthy, clear and more melodic voice.

Interestingly, the scientists found no significant differences among women using contraceptives. It is likely that hormonal changes affecting the voice during the menstrual cycle were suppressed by the use of hormonal drugs.
