Plato is my friend but the truth is dearer

Plato
Plato

Phraseologism: Plato is my friend but the truth is dearer.

Meaning: Truth, exact knowledge, is the highest, absolute value, and authority is not an argument.

Origin: From Latin: Amicus Plato, sed magis amica veritas. In world literature, it is first found in the novel (part 2, ch. 51) "Don Quixote" (1615) by the Spanish writer Miguel Cervantes de Saavedra (1547-1616). After the release of the novel, the expression became world famous. The primary source is the words of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato (421-348 BC). In the Phaedo, he puts into the mouth of Socrates these words: "Following me, think less about Socrates, and more about the truth." That is, Plato advises students to choose the truth, and not faith in the authority of the teacher. There is a similar phrase in Aristotle (1483th century BC), who in his work "Nicomachean Ethics" wrote: "Let friends and truth be dear to me, but duty commands me to give preference to truth." In other, later, ancient authors, this expression is found in the form: "Socrates is dear to me, but the truth is dearest of all." Thus, the history of the famous expression is paradoxical: its actual author - Plato - became at the same time its "hero", and it was in this time-edited form that Plato's words entered world culture. This expression served as the basis for the formation of phrases of the same type, the most famous of which are the words of the German church reformer Martin Luther (1546-XNUMX). In his work "On the Enslaved Will" he wrote: "Plato is my friend, Socrates is my friend, but the truth should be preferred."

Random phraseology:

Benevolent speeches.

Meaning:

Loyalty to the authorities.

Origin:

Title of a collection of satirical essays (1872-1876) by Mikhail Evgrafovin Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Flexible electrically conductive ceramic paper 30.03.2013

Scientists from the University of Stuttgart have developed a flexible translucent electrically conductive ceramic material based on vanadium (V) oxide. The material is based on nanofibers of vanadium oxide V2O5. They are obtained from an aqueous solution of a substance and then packaged into thin films. The process is vaguely reminiscent of making paper from wood pulp.

The authors managed to choose such conditions for drying the material, under which the fibers in the sheets are arranged almost parallel to each other. During the manufacturing process, sheets of nanofibers are stacked, connected to each other by a thin layer of water. These stacks then act as building blocks from which larger structures are formed.

Due to the oriented arrangement of the fibers, the material exhibits anisotropy: it conducts current well along the vanadium oxide filaments, but its conductivity across the fibers is limited and is determined by the ionic composition of water. The amount of water, in turn, depends on the flexibility of the material: the drier the material, the harder it is.

The authors note that the structure of the material resembles mother-of-pearl, in which thin rigid layers of calcium carbonate are connected by a protein "cement". This gives the material strength, which scientists have repeatedly tried to achieve in artificial mother-of-pearl. The new material not only differs from mother-of-pearl in flexibility and electrical conductivity, but even slightly surpasses it in strength.
