Parnassus
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Phraseologism: Parnassus.
Meaning: A collection of poets (poetry) of a nation (jokingly).
Origin: From ancient Greek mythology. Parnassus is the name of a mountain range in the region of Thessaly, on one of the slopes of which was the Kastalsky spring, which was considered the "key of poetic inspiration." One day, as ancient Greek myths tell, Apollo was inflamed with passion for a nymph, whose name was Castalia, and began to pursue her. Not wanting to give in to Apollo, she threw herself into the stream and disappeared into it. Apollo, the god of art, endowed this source with magical powers: everyone who ever tasted its waters became a poet. Parnassus is also the place of permanent residence of the god of arts Apollo. Hence the expression "Parnassian sisters", which means nine muses-companions of Apollo, inspirers of the following arts and sciences: sacred hymns (Polyhymnia), epic poetry (Calliope), lyrics (Euterpe), love songs (Erato), tragedy (Melpomene) , comedy (Thalia), dance (Terpsichore), history (Clio), astronomy (Urania). Alexander Pushkin, in his letter to his brother Leo (dated January 30, 1823, from Chisinau to St. Petersburg), jokingly wrote about Nikolai Gnedich, a poet and famous translator of Homer's poems into Russian: "Gnedich interrupts my shop (undermines trade, has become a dangerous competitor) Alas, the sad bridegroom waited for you in vain, etc. - unforgivably charming. If only he knew his Homer, otherwise there would be no place for us on Parnassus.
