Strain out a mosquito

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: Strain out the mosquito.

Meaning: Take care of the little things, forgetting about the main thing.

Origin: From the Bible. The Gospel of Matthew (ch. 23, v. 24) quotes the words of Jesus Christ about people who seem to be scrupulous, conscientious in insignificant matters, but in important matters they forget about their conscience: "Blind leaders, straining a gnat, but devouring a camel!" "Drain" in translation from the Church Slavonic language - to purify the liquid by passing it through a fine sieve, cloth, etc.

Random phraseology:

This does not depend on me.

Meaning:

About the removal of responsibility for the onset of some event or the consequences associated with it (jokingly-iron.).

Origin:

From the fairy tale "About the Zealous Boss", which is part of the series of satirical essays "Modern Idyll" (1882) by Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889). A slow-witted official, reading in one of the papers submitted to him for consideration: "It is necessary to close America again," remarks: "But it seems that this does not depend on me."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Fire detector in the forest 14.12.2008

The University of Toulouse (France) has developed a sensor that is placed in the forest and measures the moisture content of the leaves.

An infrared beam is passed through the leaf of the selected tree or bush, its intensity, indicating the moisture content in the leaf, is measured by a photodiode. When leaf moisture drops to such an extent that there is a risk of fire, the sensor sends a signal to firefighters through the cellular phone system.

A network of such devices makes it possible to build a constantly updated map of the fire situation in forests.
