open society
Henri Bergson
Phraseologism: Open Society.
Meaning: Democratic type of society, used to refer to a number of modern societies and some societies of antiquity. Usually opposed to a closed (traditional) society and various totalitarian regimes.
Origin: From the book "Two Sources of Morality and Religion" (1932) by the French philosopher Henri Bergson (1859-1941), a supporter of "intuitionism" and "philosophy of life". In the same place, he introduced into use another popular concept, opposite in meaning to the first: "a closed society." Both terms became widespread thanks to the book The Open Society and Its Enemies (1945) by the philosopher Karl Popper.
Random phraseology:
The booby of the king of heaven.
Meaning:
Stupid person, simpleton (simple disapproval).
Origin:
The word booby has a number of cognate words in folk dialects: volukh, valukh, valuuy, valyakh (with the meanings: lazy, lazy, fool, loafer). All these nouns are derivatives of the verb to wallow, almost all of them mean both a slacker and a fool (although there are hypotheses that raise the word booby to other languages, including Finnish and Arabic). The original meaning of the word boobie was "loafer, couch potato", then it develops the meaning "stupid". Against the background of popular synonyms, such as the stump of God, the expression is deciphered quite easily. It is known that holy fools, jesters, the poor and the blessed enjoyed the special mercy of God (the heavenly king). The blockhead of the king of heaven, therefore, is one of these idlers, fools who is waiting for mercy from the heavenly king. |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive SAMSUNG and LG mobile phones will harm mobile operators
26.10.2005
Samsung and LG have announced that they intend to use UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) technology in their devices, which is developed by the American company Kineto Wireless and allows the phone to switch from a cellular network to WiFi without interrupting the conversation.
Thus, the call is transferred from the cellular network to VoIP, which significantly reduces the cost of the conversation, reports Silicon.Com. Samsung is now licensing the technology, and LG is already partnering with Kineto to create dual-mode phones. LG has also announced plans to use UMA-compatible Kineto client software in its future handsets. The approximate date of appearance of new phones has not yet been reported.
The new technology is called UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access). It is designed to improve the quality of communication in rooms where GSM signals are weak, while WiFi signals, on the contrary, are quite strong. It can also help reduce the load on cellular networks.
Trials of UMA have already begun, but wireless service providers are in no hurry to release it to the masses. A possible reason for this is that when a cellular call is redirected to a WiFi network, the conversation is over Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which is cheaper than mobile communications.
