Nihilist

Turgenev I.S.
Turgenev I.S.

Phraseologism: Nihilist.

Meaning: A person who denies generally accepted values - ideals, moral norms, culture.

Origin: The expression (from the Latin nihil - nothing, nothing) was introduced in 1799 by the German philosopher and writer Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi (1743-1819). In Russia, this term appeared 30 years later - in 1829, when for the first time in Russian literature it was used by the writer Nikolai Ivanovich Nadezhdin (1804-1856) in his article "A host of nihilists", published in the journal "Bulletin of Europe" (editor M. T . Kachenovsky). The author used it in the now widely known textbook sense. The word "nihilist" became widely known thanks to the novel "Fathers and Sons" by I. S. Turgenev.

Random phraseology:

Pan or gone (either pan or gone).

Meaning:

Either achieve everything you want, or lose everything.

Origin:

There are two versions of the origin of this turnover: 1) the expression is a tracing paper from the Latin "aut Caesar, aut nihil", erroneously interpreted as "either by Caesar, or by nothing." In fact, with this saying, the Roman emperor of the 2st century. Caligula justified his excessive extravagance, saying: "Either be stingy or be Caesar," XNUMX) pan in Greek means "everything." From him came the Polish word pan - a landowner, a full owner, an independent person. This is the basis of the meaning of the expression either pan (i.e., all), or disappeared.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Who is tastier for a mosquito 15.08.2006

French microbiologists have shown that the presence of malaria pathogens in human blood makes it especially attractive to mosquitoes that carry this disease.

Thus, the chances of the parasite to pass to another person increase. Moreover, the signal "bite me" the causative agent of malaria emits only when it is at a stage suitable for infection.

Biologists studied the blood of schoolchildren in a village in Kenya. For 12 days, they selected three children daily: one uninfected, one at the non-infectious stage of development of malarial plasmodium in the blood, and one with plasmodia at the stage capable of infecting.

In the evening, these three children went to bed in three nylon tents connected by a central tent, where one hundred uninfected mosquitoes were released. Mosquitoes had the ability to choose who to bite. The one child who had Plasmodium in the blood at the stage ready to spread, on average, attracted about twice as many mosquitoes as the other two children. After the infected children were treated, the difference disappeared.

Apparently, the parasite causes some change in the smell of the breath or in the sweat of a malaria patient.
