Publius Terence Afr

Phraseologism: Nothing is said that hasn't been said before.

Meaning: Nothing is new.

Origin: From Latin: Nullum est jam dictum, quod non sit dictum prius. From the writings of the Roman comedian Terentius (Publius Terentius Afr, c. 195-159 BC). Analogue: Everything new is well forgotten old.

Random phraseology:

One, one, poor thing, like a recruit on the clock.

Meaning:

About loneliness, restlessness.

Origin:

From the poem "In the midst of a flat valley" (author's title "Song", 1811) by the poet Alexei Fedorovich Merzlyakov (1778-1830), which later became the words of a popular song: "In the midst of a flat valley, // At a smooth height // Blossoms, grows a mighty oak / / In mighty beauty. / Tall oak, spreading, / One in everyone's eyes, / One, one, poor thing, / Like a recruit on the clock. "On the clock" - at the post, like a sentry. The poet M. A. Dmitriev (1796-1866) in his book "Trifles from the stock of my memory" ("Russian Archive", 1869) reports that he witnessed how this song was written by Merzlyakov: "He talked about his loneliness , spoke sadly, took chalk and wrote almost half of this song on an open card table. Then they put a pen and paper on him: he rewrote what was written and finished the whole song right there.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Bacteria that eat dirt and breathe electricity 10.01.2020

Hot water lakes in Yellowstone National Park are home to strange bacteria. They breathe electricity and eat waste that pollutes the environment. They were discovered by a team of scientists from Washington State University.

The found microorganisms can solve two of the most important problems of mankind - environmental pollution and the impossibility of restoring energy sources. How? These microorganisms literally feed on particles of toxic substances and, in the process of their digestion, produce electricity.

Such a bacterium can absorb pollutants, converting them into less harmful substances and in doing so, produce electricity that can be used for low-power appliances.

Collecting these microbes proved to be no easy task. First, a group of scientists overcame a difficult path to four ancient pools of hot water.

Upon arrival, they lowered several electrodes into the water to attract little-known bacteria.

After 32 days, the scientists returned back to the hot springs to pick up the submerged electrodes. In them, they found heat-loving bacteria that "breathes" electricity.
