Meaning: About the difficulty of choosing what to put up with.

Origin: From the writings of the ancient Greek poet and playwright Menander (c. 342 - c. 291 BC). Fragments of them became known thanks to the Byzantine collector and publisher of ancient texts Stobaeus (VI century). He collected them in his collection "Florilegium" ("Florilegium"), where this expression is presented: "Marriage ... an evil, but a necessary evil." In the same collection is placed another, which has become widely known, the phrase of Menander: "Time is the doctor of all necessary evils."
