Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Lack of sleep leads to overeating 24.01.2012

New data from Swedish researchers at the University of Uppsala indicates that sleep deprivation triggers mechanisms in the brain that lead to overeating. The results of an earlier study showed that in the morning after a completely sleepless night, the body of young men with normal body weight significantly reduced energy intake. Moreover, they had an increased feeling of hunger, which testified to the ability of an acute lack of sleep to influence a person's perception of food.

In their new work, the researchers conducted a systematic analysis, the purpose of which was to identify areas of the brain involved in the formation of the sensation of hunger, which are affected by lack of sleep. Using the method of functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), they analyzed the brain activity of 12 men with normal body weight, while they considered meals of different calorie content.

Comparison of the results obtained after a sleepless night with the results obtained in the study of sleepy men showed that in the first case, the participants showed increased activity in the right anterior cingulate cortex of the brain. The severity of the observed pattern did not depend on the calorie content of the dish in question, or on the results of a preliminary assessment of the experienced feeling of hunger, or on the concentration of glucose in the blood measured on an empty stomach. However, the results of the assessment of the strength of the feeling of hunger, carried out after the end of the brain scan, were proportional to the level of activation of the indicated area of the cerebral cortex.

The results obtained suggest that a sleepless night is a strong stimulus to food absorption, independent of the actual feeling of hunger and blood glucose levels. It is possible that this mechanism makes a significant contribution to the growing problem of obesity among the populations of Western Europe and the United States.
