Science can do a lot of geeks

Science can do a lot of geeks
Science can do a lot of geeks

Phraseologism: Science can do a lot of geeks.

Meaning: About something completely incomprehensible, tricky (iron., joke.).

Origin: The phrase is at the heart of the popular card trick. The spectator shuffles the deck and lays out 10 pairs of cards from it. It then remembers any pair. The couple returns to their place. The magician lays out the cards in four rows. Having completed the layout, he invites the viewer to indicate in which rows the intended cards are located. Then he guesses these cards. Secret of the trick: you need to remember the phrase Science can do a lot of geeks. "Science" - the first line, "can" - the second, "many" - the third, "githik" - the fourth. 10 pairs of cards correspond to 10 pairs of identical letters. Pairs of cards are laid out in pairs of letters: A-A, U-U, O-O, and so on. When the viewer points to the rows in which the intended cards lie, they can be easily identified by the same letters in these rows. The word "githik" does not mean anything, it is artificial: in the part "science can do a lot" there are no pairs for the letters "g", "t", "k", and one more pair of letters is missing in order to have them in total 20. So, two more "and" are added.

Random phraseology:

hereditary enemy.

Meaning:

About historical stereotypes of an unfriendly country and its inhabitants.

Origin:

From German: das Erbfeind. From French: "L" ennemi hercditaire". This expression was well known before, but became especially popular after the release of the play "Getz von Berlichingen" by Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832). The character of the play, Weislingen, speaks like this about Turkey ( scene "In the castle of Goetz", act 1). The expression became popular in Europe and was applied to different countries. Thus, in the XNUMXth century, France and Germany considered each other hereditary, hereditary enemies.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Sound waves are the carrier of mass 17.03.2019

Scientists from Columbia and Pennsylvania Universities have been researching issues related to the behavior and dispersion of sound waves propagating in a superfluid liquid, liquid helium. The first of their experiments showed that sound has a non-zero mass value and, due to this, its movement falls under the influence of the global gravitational field, the force of gravity in this case.

The level of effects discovered by scientists is so small that its manifestations cannot be felt on Earth in any way, they can manifest themselves in very extreme conditions, when the generated stellar "roar" moves in the environment of extremely dense objects, such as neutron stars. And then the effects of the interaction of powerful sound waves with the strongest gravity of space objects can significantly affect the processes occurring in this region of space.

While scientists have confirmed the possibility of sound waves having mass under extreme conditions, they are now preparing a series of experiments that should confirm that phonons, sound particles, have mass under normal conditions. All this contradicts the existing theory, according to which phonons have no mass and gravitational fields do not affect their motion in any way.

The key to solving the problem described above will be the study of phonon propagation in a medium with given parameters. In an ideal medium, the motion of phonons and the transfer of momentum of motion can be described as one of the forms of linear dispersion, which, according to theoretical calculations, gives the phonons a non-zero mass. But in the reality that scientists have to face, everything is much worse, real particles and liquids are far from ideal, they obey a host of other physical laws, interact and have a mutual influence on other nearby objects.

The mass that scientists are going to find in the phonon is very small. It is in the same range as the amount of energy of a photon of light divided by the square of the speed of light, in other words, this mass is very, very small. Unfortunately, far from all the theoretical calculations and confirmations put forward by scientists have been tested in practice, for this it will be necessary to measure gravitational changes at the level of individual atoms cooled to a temperature close to absolute zero. This will become possible in the near future, only recently have scientists been able to experiment with Bose-Einstein condensates in space.
