Meaning: Common noun for institutions of a totalitarian society (iron.).

Origin: From the dystopian novel "1984" (1949) by the English writer George Orwell (pseudonym of Eric Blair, 1903-1950). The Ministry, which is only formally the Ministry of Information (Press), actually plays the role of the Ministry of Propaganda, spreading only the "truth" that serves the interests of the authorities in a totalitarian (police) state.
