Hot Springs of Mars 02.12.2012

Hydrothermal crevices around Martian craters may have once been a habitat for microbes. A new joint study by the University of Leicester and the Open University, published this week in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters, proves that the water on Mars was warm enough to support life. The study establishes that the range of water temperatures on the planet was from 50 to 150 degrees Celsius. Microbes on Earth are able to live in such water, for example, in the volcanic hot springs of Yellowstone Park.

The work of scientists was based on a detailed study of meteorites from Mars using powerful microscopes at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester. This was followed by work on computer modeling carried out at the Open University.

Lead study author Dr. John Bridges said: Earth has meteorites from Mars.The most interesting of them are nakhlites - named after a Martian meteorite found near the Egyptian city of Nakhla.Meteorites from this group are penetrated by small "veins" filled with minerals.And these minerals were formed by the action of water near the surface of Mars ".

Dr. Bridges and his group studied the Nakhlite in detail. Only eight of them are known, and all of them have, albeit small, but significant differences in the composition of minerals. The Lafayette meteorite gave scientists the most information - the most complete and informative selection of minerals was found in its cavities. Careful study showed that the earliest material to form along the walls of meteorite "veins" was iron carbonate. It forms in CO2 enriched water at a temperature of about 150 degrees. When the water was cooled to 50, then clay minerals began to form, which passed from the crystalline to the amorphous phase and had the same composition as clay.

By combining data from both universities, the researchers determined the properties of water on Mars. Initially, it was about 150 degrees and contained carbon dioxide, forming carbonates, and then cooled to 50, forming clays. Despite the fact that clays were also detected by orbiters on the surface of the Red Planet, the spatial resolution of the images was insufficient to draw definite conclusions. Until scientists studied nakhlites in detail, it was not known that carbonates form first, and only after them clay when water cools.
