And I was born in Arcadia

Bartolomeo Skidone, "And I was born in Arcadia"
Bartolomeo Skidone, "And I was born in Arcadia"

Phraseologism: And I was born in Arcadia.

Meaning: It is usually used in a broad sense, far from the original, when the speaker wants to declare his involvement in something, belonging to a certain circle of people, about something (talent, hobby, interests, etc.) that he unites someone, etc.

Origin: From Latin: Et ego in Arcadia fui. Literally: And I was in Arcadia. The original source is a painting by the Italian artist Bartolomeo Skidone (1559-1615), which is located in Rome, in the Palazzo Sharra Colonna. It depicts a gravestone with the inscription "And I was born in Arcadia" and two shepherdesses who are examining this tombstone. This phrase is an appeal of a dead person to the living: I, like you, who are now reading these words, was born, enjoyed life. And now - he died, such an outcome awaits you. The plot of the picture was, according to the artist, to remind people of the brevity of life, the frailty of everything earthly. Later, other artists used this plot - the Italian Guercino (1591-1666) and the Frenchman Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), and the inscription on the stone became a popular symbol. For example, when Poussin himself died, it was these words that were carved on his grave bas-relief. The same inscription will later appear on the monument to the French romantic poet Chateaubriand erected in Rome. The phrase gained a second life after the great German poet and playwright Johann Friedrich Schiller made it the first line of his poem "Resignation" ("Humility", 1787) - Auch ich war in Arcadien geboren. Soon both this expression and the poem itself - under the title "Submission to Providence" - will become famous in Russia thanks to the translation made (1826) by the poet Mikhail Dmitriev: "And I was born in Arcadia! // Above the cradle of the infant and me // Nature vouched for joy! // And I was born in Arcadia, // But the gift of my spring was only one tear ... "Another translation of this phrase will be popular in Russia, which belongs to the famous Russian novelist Grigory Danilevsky (1829 -1890) - And I, friends, was born in Arcadia.

Random phraseology:

Bead game.

Meaning:

About the writer's work with the word, about the torments of the word.

Origin:

From German: Das Glasperlenspiel. Book title (1943) by German writer Hermann Hesse (1877-1962). In the introductory chapter to the novel, the author wrote (translated by S. Apt): "The Glass Bead Game is [...] a game with all the content and values of our culture."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Wind power reaches record 1 TW 15.06.2023

An important achievement in the field of wind energy: the world's installed capacity has reached the mark of 1 terawatt (TW). After 40 years of efforts and development of the wind industry, we have reached this milestone in clean energy production. However, according to the forecasts of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), we can expect to reach the mark of 2 TW in less than seven years.

In the early 1970s, Danish engineers began experimenting with wind power, and this research became the basis for the modern wind industry. Since then, the global wind power industry has developed rapidly and its growth has been enormous. According to Wood Mackenzie, by the end of this year, the global installed capacity of wind energy will exceed the 1 TW mark. However, GWEC notes that we have already reached this mark, and this is confirmed by completed projects in China, the USA, Europe and Morocco.

Despite an important achievement in wind power, Jonathan Cole, head of GWEC, notes that we are only at the beginning of what needs to be done to combat climate change. To avert the catastrophic effects of climate change on societies and ecosystems around the world, we urgently need to transform our economies and increase wind energy production.

The goal is to achieve an installed wind capacity of at least 8 terawatts by the middle of the coming century to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions. There is not much time to solve this problem, so we can no longer linger.
