Transparent sensors based on Gorilla Glass 24.06.2014

Everyone knows Gorilla Glass. They protect the displays of most mid-range and high-end smartphones, at least when it comes to well-known brands.

The company's specialists, together with scientists from the Polytechnic University of Montreal, have developed two new completely transparent sensors based on Corning glass. The developers managed to achieve this by abandoning the usual methods of transmitting information used in this case. Instead of albeit very thin, but still metal wires, scientists used optical waveguides obtained directly on the glass surface by etching.

Thanks to this, it was possible to create two sensors: a temperature sensor based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer and an infrared identification sensor. The first one is the most interesting in that it measures the temperature due to microchanges in the glass structure itself, and hence changes in the parameters of the waveguide.

For now, these are just the first steps. But in the future, such technologies will help create almost completely transparent devices.
