Intel develops new SSD specifications for ultrabooks 09.08.2012

Intel wants to standardize specifications for mSATA solid state drives aimed at ultrabooks. For this purpose, Intel is seeking partnerships with leading NAND flash memory manufacturers and major PC manufacturers. Detailed specifications will be accepted by September 2012. Completely new standards will be adapted to ultrabooks in 2013.

Intel aims to unify mSATA SSDs into one standard, the Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF). Also participating in the discussion of the new standard are companies such as Micron, SanDisk and Samsung Electronics.

One of the reasons Intel decided to implement the new standard is to limit the current mSATA form factor to the maximum number of NAND chips placed on the board - up to five chips with a maximum total capacity of 512 GB. The new NGFF standard will allow chips to be placed on both sides of the board, which will increase the maximum SSD capacity in ultrabooks to at least 1TB while maintaining the same PCB dimensions. However, Intel also proposes to reconsider this parameter. Leaving the thickness and width of the PCB unchanged, Intel wants to change its length. At the moment, options are considered in lengths of 20, 42, 60, 80 and 120 mm.
