New type of wireless charging from Microsoft 21.01.2015

Microsoft's research division has developed wireless smartphone charging technology that allows you to place your smartphone anywhere and without putting it on a special stand. The new technology consists of two parts: a light-beam charging system and a mobile device detection system on the table.

“The new method eliminates the need to connect a cable to the smartphone or place the device on the charger stand. For AutoCharge to work, the device simply needs to be placed on the table. The installation itself will find the location of the smartphone and direct a beam of light at it if the battery level is low,” the engineers explain. For energy transfer, the same method is used that is used in solar panels. When light hits a solar panel, an electric current is generated in its circuit. In order to make the transfer of energy with the help of light indoors efficient, the engineers made the beam concentrated and strictly directed. The light source is LEDs.

A video camera is used to detect the smartphone on the table. She takes off the entire surface of the table. As soon as a device appears on it, the installation controller, using an electric drive, turns the light emitter towards the mobile phone. Smartphone detection takes about 30ms, and the beam appears after a second. As soon as the battery of the device is fully charged, the beam turns off. If there are several devices on the table, the unit can charge them all one by one.

For the technology to work, it is necessary to equip the device being charged with a photocell, which will convert light into electric current. To know the charge level, use the light indicator on the mobile device. He also informs the system that the battery is fully charged and the beam must be turned off. If a foreign object gets in the way of the light, the system can interrupt the light emission within 50 ms.

Microsoft Research specialists note that both the back and front panels of the smartphone can be equipped with photocells, so it will not matter how it lies on the table.
