Focus Description:

It is easy to make from durable rubber. A bicycle nipple tube is best suited for this: it is thin, elastic and strong enough (Fig. 23, A). A small bag of the desired size is sewn from durable material. A soft wire is sewn inside its upper wide edge, which will prevent the coin from falling out when you squeeze the edges of the bag. On fig. 23, B shows a bag for scarves.

Focus The simplest kind of pulling mechanics
Fig. 23

The application of mechanics is clear from fig. 23, B. One end of the rubber is firmly sewn to the bag, and the second is tied with a loop, which is put on under the suit on the waist belt or on a button specially sewn for this. The rubber must be made exactly of such a length so that it can reach the thing to the right place. Having thrown a loop, the rubber is stretched, and the bag is placed in the sleeve so that it does not interfere with movements. At a convenient moment, the bag is discreetly removed, an object is put into it and released. The object instantly "disappears" from the hands and is placed at the disposal of the magician.

The described model has two drawbacks: the rubber is always stretched, which makes manipulation difficult; the thing is not "given away" by itself, it must be taken out of the bag. But still, even such a primitive "mechanics" can do a good job.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

Sugar based fuel cell 22.01.2014

The fuel cell, created by American biotechnologists, works using sugar and a set of synthetic enzymes. The current source has a record high electrical capacitance, which will make it possible to use such energy sources to power gadgets and household appliances, according to an article in the journal Nature Communications.

"Sugar is one of the most ideal ways to store energy ever invented by nature. So it seems very logical that we tried to use its energy potential and develop a "green" food source, whose production will not be able to worsen the ecological situation on Earth", - says Percival Zhang from the Virginia Polytechnic University (USA, Blacksburg).

Percival Zhang and his colleagues experimented with various synthetic and natural enzymes capable of converting sugar into other forms of organics or oxidizing its decay products. During the experiments, scientists managed to compile the necessary set of proteins that can decompose sugar as efficiently as possible, extracting the maximum free electrons from its decay products.

Scientists adapted a mixture of enzymes to work as a catalyst in an ordinary fuel cell, after which they tested it in action. As it turned out, such a fuel cell produced electricity with a record efficiency for power supplies of this class. At the same time, the fuel cell could compete in terms of electrical capacity with lithium-based batteries that are now common.

All that is needed for this fuel cell to work is a small amount of water, sugar and air. Unlike many other fuel cells, the development of American scientists is safe to use, since during the operation of the power source no hydrogen or other gases are released that can explode. The authors of the article believe that the high efficiency of their development will allow the new fuel cell to supplant the now common power sources in the coming years.
