Nanocatalyst on orange peel

An international team of scientists has created a catalyst by simple mixing in a special mill, without solvents and other additional substances. The basis was the orange peel, which was previously ground. It was placed in the mill chamber, anhydrous form of zinc acetate and 18 steel balls with a diameter of 1 cm were added. The mixture was stirred for 20 minutes at a frequency of 350 rpm, then heated at a temperature of 2 degrees for 200 hours.

The orange peel collected zinc acetate on its surface and helped form transition compounds. During firing, it was partially removed from the mixture - zinc oxide nanoparticles were obtained. After that, using a mill, the zinc oxide nanoparticles were combined with particles containing niobium so that the metal concentration in the final catalyst was from 2,5 to 10%.

The effect of the nanocatalyst was tested by scientists using the example of the conversion of levulinic acid into nitrogen-containing heterocycles. The concentration, in which 10% of particles with niobium and 90% of zinc oxide nanoparticles, turned out to be the most effective. The results showed that 94,5% of levulinic acid was converted to the desired substance. At the same time, only 2,6% - 97,4% of the output products were nitrogen-containing heterocycles.

Levulinic acid, which is easily obtained from biomass, is one of the 10 most promising platform molecules. The conversion of levulinic acid to nitrogen-containing heterocycles has become a very attractive topic in the last few years due to the remarkable ability of heterocycles to serve in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and polymer industries.

Innovative 4D NAND Flash 08.11.2018

Korean company SK Hynix, the second largest chip manufacturer in the world, introduced the first ever innovative 4D NAND flash memory.

The novelty is a 96-layer TLC NAND memory that uses charge trap (CTF) and PUC (Peri. Under Cell) memory technologies. The density of the crystal is 512 Gbit.

The prefix 4D means the use of not only the vertical integration of memory cells, but also the placement of peripheral circuits in the underlying layer.

A similar layout has been seen before, as well as CTF technology. SK Hynix's innovation lies in the simultaneous use of both CTF and PUC.

The new solution made it possible to reduce the size of the chip by more than 30%, while the number of chips per wafer, on the contrary, increased by 49% compared to 72-layer 3D NAND crystals of the same density.
