Body temperature affects life expectancy

13.02.2021

Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute have shown that reducing calories is associated with an increase in life expectancy and a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease, dementia and diabetes. These diseases are associated with age and significantly reduce the quality of life in old age.

During the experiment, two groups of mice received a reduced calorie diet, with one group kept at room temperature and the other placed in a warm place where the temperature was about 30 degrees Celsius. In such conditions, it is more difficult for animals to lower their body temperature. Two more groups of mice ate as usual and lived in the conditions of the first or second group.

During the experiment, scientists found that temperature has the same effect on the state of the body as a decrease in calories, and maybe more. When the animals ate less food, their body temperature dropped. But a decrease in body temperature, even without food restriction, had a positive effect, increasing the lifespan of rodents.

According to experts, the creation of drugs that mimic a decrease in body temperature can be a way to reduce the risk of age-related diseases and extend the period of a healthy life.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Molecular machines will provide a breakthrough in medicine 18.10.2012

A research team led by German physicist Prof. Hermann Gaub has developed a technology for ultra-precise assembly of molecular machines. The new technology promises a breakthrough in a very promising area, which in turn opens up wide opportunities for the manufacture of microscopic devices capable of performing a wide variety of tasks: from the production of materials to the targeted delivery of drug molecules.

Molecular machines could make a real revolution in all areas of human activity, however, to assemble such machines, it is necessary to manipulate individual protein molecules with nanometer precision. German scientists finally managed to do it. They used a technique known as Single-Molecule Cut and Paste (SMC&P), which in its original form was only applicable to DNA molecules. Hermann Gaub improved SMC&P, and now with the help of an ultra-fine needle of an atomic force microscope, it is possible to capture a single biomolecule and combine it with another with nanometer precision.

Natural molecular machines, made up of proteins, in our body are responsible for many of the biochemical processes that occur in living cells. The creation of artificial analogues of such machines is one of the main goals of nanotechnology. From a practical point of view, this promises not only the possibility of controlling the vital activity of cells, but the availability of the production of various materials, the assembly of nanomachines, etc.

Until now, the problem of manipulations at the nanoscale remains very difficult. In a liquid medium at room temperature, "weather conditions" at the nanoscale are comparable to a tornado. For the first time, German scientists managed to securely attach molecules to the tip of an atomic microscope needle without damaging them. For this, a combination of antibodies, DNA-binding proteins and DNA anchors was used.

With the help of the new technology, scientists were able to create a figure of a man from hundreds of fluorescent molecules, similar to the one that is drawn at traffic lights. It will be possible to manufacture various complex protein machines with a variety of functions. For example, you can choose a combination of enzymes that break down the most dangerous toxins or process biomass into fuel.
