Graphene water filter

30.01.2021

When sheets of two-dimensional nanomaterials, such as graphene, are stacked on top of each other, tiny gaps form between the sheets, which have many potential uses. A team of researchers at Brown University has found a way to orient these gaps so that they can be used to filter water and other liquids from nano-sized contaminants.

The gaps between the graphene sheets in question are called nanochannels. In fact, they are difficult to use for water filtration due to the location of the nanochannels. Imagine a notebook with sheets of graphene instead of sheets of paper. They are thinner in the vertical direction compared to the length and width in the horizontal plane. This means that the channels between the sheets are also oriented horizontally, which is not ideal for filtration: the liquid has to travel a relatively long distance to get from one end of the channel to the other. It would be better if the channels were perpendicular to the orientation of the sheets. In this case, the liquid will only have to pass a relatively thin vertical height of the stack.

Scientists at Brown University have found a way to make these nanochannels vertical. Their method consists of laying sheets of graphene on an elastic substrate that is stretched. After all the sheets are laid, the tension of the warp is released - and it shrinks. When this happens, the graphene folds into an accordion, forming rises and falls, and the channels tilt as they do so.

Once the channels are almost vertical, the assembly is covered with epoxy and then the top and bottom are cut off, which opens the channels all the way through the material. The scientists named their membrane VAGME (vertically oriented graphene membrane).

Membrane testing has shown that water vapor can easily seep through the VAGME and hexane, a larger organic molecule, is filtered out. The researchers plan to continue developing the technology with possible industrial or domestic filtration applications.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

CoolMOS P7 MOSFETs 600V 19.04.2020

Infineon introduced the IPW60R045P7XKSA1, IPW60R024P7XKSA1, IPP60R160P7XKSA1 transistors in the TO-247 package, which are part of the 600-volt CoolMOS P7 transistor line. The CoolMOS P7 line is the successor to CoolMOS P6 and combines ease of use, excellent performance and low price. It is suitable for a wide range of applications from low power SMPS to high power solutions.

CoolMOS P7 600V series transistors have efficiency up to 1,5% higher than competitors, as well as lower heating temperatures (lower by 4,2C compared to competitors).

The gate charge (Qg) and turn-off loss (Eoss) of the CoolMOS P7 line is 30 to 60 percent lower than previous lines and analogues from other manufacturers, which allows to reduce switching losses to a minimum and ensures high efficiency when working with different powers. Low values of open channel resistance (RDS(on.)) allow high power density.

The CoolMOS P7 series transistors offer excellent resistance to electrostatic discharges > 2 kV (HBM), and for solutions with (RDS(on.)) values greater than 100 mΩ, a high level of ESD protection is guaranteed by the built-in zener diode.

Key features:

High reliability;
High efficiency and ease of use;
Low switching losses;
ESD resistance > 2 kV (HBM);
Best in class RDS(on.);
Wide range of applications.

Areas of use:

Lighting;
Telecommunications;
Laptop adapters, PC power supply;
Solar inverters;
Server solutions;
Chargers for electric vehicles.
