Washbasin without plumbing

Japanese inventors have created a wireless washstand that can be installed directly on the street or in public places. The device does not require connection to the water network and works by recycling water.

"We do not want to provoke crowds, but we want to show that Ginza is a safe place. Therefore, the goal of this project is to remind people of cleanliness and hygiene rules as often as possible," says Akira Ito, head of organizing mass events.

Non-contact wash-hand basin: the faucet and soap dispenser are operated by motion sensors. And most importantly, it is environmentally friendly: it does not connect to the water supply, but works by processing water. Purification takes place in 3 stages: first filtration, then chlorine treatment and finally disinfection with ultraviolet light. On average, 20 liters of water is enough for half a thousand procedures. After 2 thousand uses, the filters are replaced.

"In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, we decided that it would be great if people could wash their hands anywhere and anytime. In fact, at the heart of this sink is a huge filter station, which we reduced a thousand times. But we kept its real power " says inventor Yosuke Maeda.

An ultra-modern car wash takes care of the cleanliness of not only hands, but also smartphones. To disinfect the gadget, it should be brought to the built-in device, which emits ultraviolet radiation for 20-30 seconds.

“We often forget to sterilize smartphones. I use it all the time, but I never thought that I didn’t disinfect it enough. It’s good that this machine reminds me that a smartphone should always be kept clean,” says Tokyo resident Natsuko Moriyama.

So far, wireless washstands can only be seen in Japanese cities - 4 of them have already been made. But next year the novelty will appear abroad. Most orders to inventors came from the United States.

Nanowires on graphene grow by themselves 09.05.2013

Engineers at the University of Illinois tried to grow semiconductor compounds from nanowires on a sheet of graphene and found that the nanowires grow in a completely unexpected way. This discovery is extremely important for the electronics industry and changes the paradigm of epitaxy technology.

Nanowires are tiny strips of semiconductor material. Experts believe that it is nanowires that will become the basis of the electronics of the future and will be widely used for the manufacture of transistors, solar panels, lasers, sensors, etc.

American scientists explored the possibilities of nanowires by growing them using van der Waals epitaxy technology on a flat substrate of semiconductor materials such as silicon. In particular, they were engaged in growing wires of the so-called class III-V (three-five). These semiconductors are essential for creating new generation solar panels and lasers. Previously, scientists have already observed the growth of III-V nanowires on silicon substrates.

Recently, researchers at the University of Illinois decided to try growing indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) nanowires on a sheet of graphene and found an unexpected result. InGaAs nanowires self-formed into an unusual structure in which the core is made of one material, indium arsenide, and the outer shell is made of another, InGaAs. At the same time, the structure of nanowires can be controlled using the ratio of indium and gallium, which makes it possible to tune the optical and conductive properties of nanowires.

Many laboratories are working on the development of such a technology for composite nanowires, and until now, the manufacture of tiny wires in a "braid" from another material was considered a complex process requiring a special approach. Growing composite nanowires on a graphene substrate is a great achievement. Graphene itself has many advantages over silicon. So, graphene is flexible and conducts electricity well, besides, the raw material for graphene (carbon) can be taken directly from the air. Currently, about 80% of the cost of a solar cell is the cost of the silicon substrate. If it is possible to establish mass production of graphene, then a sharp reduction in the cost of electronics and solar energy awaits us.
