A group of Portuguese scientists found that physical activity at least once a week throughout life can protect a person from the manifestations of depression.

During the study, which lasted for four years, the researchers followed 32 people from 14 European countries, ranging in age from late middle to old. This is because the prevalence of depression is highest among the 55 to 74 age group.

After analyzing all the data, the researchers concluded that physical activity, whether it's brisk walking, gardening or doing household chores, at least once a week, significantly reduces the number of depressive symptoms in the subjects.

At the same time, it was also found that any physical activity, even the most minimal one, can serve as both a prevention of depressive symptoms and an effective method of getting rid of them.

The data of many studies speak in favor of horticulture. In addition to regular physical activity, which has a positive effect on health, while digging in the ground, we interact with plants, develop fine motor skills, breathe fresh air, and sunbathe. This significantly reduces stress levels. Even the green color of the leaves around helps to cope with negative emotions!
