Predicting major solar flares

21.08.2020

Solar flares emit sudden, strong bursts of electromagnetic radiation from the Sun's surface and atmosphere, and eject plasma and energetic particles into interplanetary space. Since large solar flares can cause severe space weather disturbances that affect the Earth, their occurrence must be predicted to mitigate their impact. However, since the mechanism by which solar flares occur is unclear, most flare prediction methods so far have been based on empirical methods.

A research team at the Institute for Space Studies of the Earth's Environment at Nagoya University has succeeded in developing the first physical model that can accurately predict impending major solar flares.

The new flare prediction method, called the kappa scheme, is based on the theory of "two-arc instability", that is, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instability caused by magnetic reconnection. The researchers hypothesized that a small-scale reconnection of magnetic field lines could form a double arc (m-shaped) magnetic field and trigger a solar flare. The kappa scheme can predict how a small magnetic reconnection causes a large flare and how a large solar flare can occur.

The predictive model was tested on approximately 200 active regions during solar cycle 24 from 2008 to 2019 using data from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite. With few exceptions, the kappa pattern has been shown to predict the most imminent solar flares, as well as the exact location from which they will appear.

The researchers also found that a new parameter - "magnetic swirling flux density" close to the magnetic polarity reversal line on the Sun's surface - determines when and where solar flares can occur and how big they can be.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

AMD Embedded 4K GPU 28.03.2014

The Embedded Radeon E8860 Adelaar GPU runs on the AMD Graphics Core Next architecture; its performance is more than 2 times higher than its predecessors at the same power consumption. The processor supports 3D graphics and 4K resolution, capable of complex parallel computing. The increase in calculations with single precision numbers compared to the previous generation of processors is 33%. This processor allows you to solve complex tasks, such as face recognition, gestures, work with biometric and DNA analyzes and the creation of meteorological maps.

Now more than ever, demand for rich, vibrant images and advanced parallel computing capabilities has grown. The closer the world is to the Internet of Things, the greater the need will be, said Scott Aylor, vice president and general manager of AMD's Embedded Solutions business. "Traditional graphics are no longer able to meet the current and potential needs of embedded systems," said Scott Eylor.

As Chris Rommel, executive vice president of M2M's embedded systems division, told Guru 3D VDC Research, embedded GPUs such as the AMD E8860 will continue to adapt to the growing demand for HD, 3D and even 4K displays. different types and sizes. "The proliferation of GPGPU-based computing will only increase the feasibility of using GPUs outside the realm of visual applications: medical, military and aerospace industries will become new consumers, because the efficiency of high-volume parallel computing plays a big role for them," he said.

According to Valery Drobyshevsky, Commercial Director of Quarta Technologies, the E8860 is a solution that satisfies the demand of "tomorrow". And although there are still few panels of such sizes in the domestic market where the advantages of 4K will be noticeable, the demand for high resolution will grow, especially in such a direction as Digital Signage (Digital advertising and information panels). "Everything related to the advertising market is now moving towards ultra-high resolution panels - this is an irreversible evolutionary process. If we are used to a high-resolution picture at the household level, we subconsciously expect this from the display media around us. And given that the size of digital panels in public places much more than the home TV, the resolution also increases.

According to the expert, factors such as the high cost of solutions on large panels (still prevailing over the cost of static media), as well as the unavailability of hardware equipment, content and the immaturity of the market, are hindering the growth in popularity of 4K panels so far. But there are prospects, especially for the Hi-End advertising market and various visualization systems. In addition, Valery Drobyshevsky notes, solutions for visualizing activities in various business areas are being actively developed: collaboration tools, teleconferences, situational centers, process control systems, video surveillance, etc. All of these devices require a high degree of detail, and high-performance hardware "stuffing" that supports it.
