The brightest fluorescent material

20.08.2020

A team of scientists from Indiana University, USA, and the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, overcame several major challenges and developed the technology to produce what could be called the brightest fluorescent material to date. What's more, this new material can effectively act as a filler for paints and polymer materials, opening up possibilities for next-generation solar cells, lasers, and more.

The main problem that was mentioned in the first paragraph is the mutual influence of fluorescent particles that are placed inside a solid or liquid composition. These particles are arranged randomly, and most of the light photons they re-emit are absorbed by particles located in close proximity. Moreover, if the particles touch each other, then part of the energy of the absorbed photon of light is taken away by another particle. And all this, in turn, reduces the level of fluorescence, in other words, paints and solid materials look more dull than they could be with the "correct" arrangement of the dye particles.

The solution to this problem was the special star-shaped macrocyclic molecules that prevent the molecules of the fluorescent substance from touching and interacting. The composition of these macro-stars was mixed into the dye, and after that, the so-called ionic insulating lattices were formed in the solution. These lattices can be grown as crystals, dried and ground into powders, which in turn can be thinly applied to surfaces or incorporated into transparent polymeric materials to give them the appropriate color.

Previously, scientists have already tried to use macrocyclic molecules for a similar purpose, but in these attempts, scientists used colored molecules. Now scientists have used colorless versions of such molecules, which allowed the fluorescent dye particles to work "at full capacity" due to the presence of free space between them.

The new super-bright materials have many applications, according to scientists, including solar energy harvesting, lasers, information display technologies, materials with "switchable" optical properties, and so on. And in the near future, scientists plan to continue working on new materials in order to adapt their production to the conditions specific to each specific application.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Nissan X-Trail on tracks 23.01.2024

Nissan has unveiled the X-Trail Mountain Rescue concept in the Italian ski resort of Cervinia. This is a rescue vehicle designed to remind winter sports enthusiasts of the importance of safety. The concept design, although not intended for series production, has been thought out down to the smallest detail, in addition to changes to the exterior design that make it more efficient on snow. X-Trail also received all the necessary equipment, including a siren, a stretcher and even a drone for an aerial overview of the surrounding area.

The X-Trail Mountain Rescue is based on the X-Trail e-Power hybrid with e-4ORCE all-electric drive. The crossover's conventional wheels have been replaced with tracks that raise the body 23 centimeters above the surface. Nissan claims e-4ORCE all-wheel drive can respond to changing road conditions in 1/10 of a second - approximately 000 times faster than traditional systems. Traction is adjusted individually for each wheel depending on traction conditions.

Exterior modifications to the X-Trail Mountain Rescue include fender flares, a winch, reinforced tow hooks, additional lights front and rear, and a roof rack designed to carry stretchers and snow shovels.

The car's interior was adapted for rescue missions, where the rear seat was replaced with a stretcher to transport injured skiers. Nearby there is a special seat for the doctor, turned towards the driver. The vehicle is equipped with a Garmin GPS, Motorola radios, and a closet stocked with emergency supplies such as thermal blankets and avalanche probes. There is room at the back for a DJI drone.
