New opportunities for overclocking 7nm chips

15.08.2020

As the scale of the chip manufacturing process decreases, not only the size of transistors decreases, but also the accompanying "infrastructure", for example, the diameter of the holes for creating vertical contacts. Such contacts are made from tungsten in a metallization process, and their resistance increases as technology standards decrease, which reduces the performance and energy efficiency of the chips. But it managed to get around.

The reserve was opened by Applied Materials. The fact is that modern technical processes involve the deposition of tungsten from a vapor medium onto metallization holes specially prepared for this. Before deposition (filling the holes with tungsten), a layer of titanium nitride is deposited on the chip surface and on the walls of the holes in the dielectric layer. This substance improves the "sticking" of tungsten to the walls of the holes for vertical contacts, protects the crystal from contamination by fluorine, which is used in the deposition process, and finally aligns the walls of the holes.

Applied Materials' new process and splice plating machine fills dielectric holes with tungsten from the bottom instead of the top (video below). The company called it "selective gap filling." Since new materials and technologies are used for this, it is no longer necessary to protect the crystal from fluorine, as well as to improve the adhesion of tungsten to the walls of vertical holes.

The proposed technology reduces the resistance of vertical connections by 40%, and in fact, up to 300 kilometers of such connections are laid in each 100-mm silicon wafer with chips. The benefits of using the new technology promise to be very, very impressive.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Electromagnetic generator operating without fuel 25.12.2023

South Korean research institute SEMP and Abu Dhabi's Global Solutions for Project Management presented an innovative device called AISEG. This device is an innovative system for generating electricity that operates without the need for fuel.

AISEG represents a promising technology solution that takes energy to the next level by providing stable and environmentally friendly power supply. Its scalability and versatility make it a promising choice for a variety of applications, from home power systems to transportation and industrial applications.

AISEG technology allows you to efficiently generate electricity with a constant output frequency, stimulated by stable magnetic fields generated using artificial intelligence.

This generator produces electrical impulses inside a copper coil wrapped around a metal base using the principles of electromagnetism.

"Our generator is self-powered, compact in size and has an unlimited service life. It represents a significant step forward in the evolution of energy technology," said SEMP CEO Woo Hee Choi.

The generator is highly scalable and can be used in various applications such as power plants, off-grid homes, electric vehicles without the need for periodic recharging, as well as on ships and aircraft, as well as in mobile phones.

The modular structure of the generator allows flexibility and adaptability to different needs, while low operating costs and minimal infrastructure requirements make the device a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.
