Created a material that emits a narrow spectrum of light when heated

30.03.2020

Physicists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have synthesized a three-dimensional tungsten photonic crystal - a material that can control the properties of a photon - with six shifted layers. Its crystal structure is similar to diamond, and the material itself also has an optical resonator, which further narrows the emission spectrum. The photonic crystal itself compresses the emitted spectrum of light to a range of about one micrometer. The resonator allows you to narrow this value to 0,07 micrometers.

While testing the new material, the scientists placed it on a silicon substrate side by side with a blackbody made from carbon nanotubes. In the experiment, the authors heated the materials up to 600 K and measured the spectrum of the radiation emitted by them. It turned out that the emission peak falls at a wavelength of 1,7 micrometers, corresponding to the infrared range. Moreover, the intensity of such radiation is eight times higher than that of a black body.

Although the current theory is not yet fully able to describe the observed phenomena, scientists suggest that they are associated with the displacement of the layers of the photonic crystal and allow light to escape from many spaces within its structure. Photons bounce off a large number of obstacles in the crystal structure of the material and change their characteristics.

The new material can be used in areas such as energy collection, tracking and identification of military targets based on infrared radiation, and the production of high-performance optical sources in the infrared range. It will also find application in IR spectroscopy and optics as a component of an infrared laser.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Transcend SuperMLC technology 05.01.2016

Transcend Information has announced the development of SuperMLC technology, which is expected to lead to fast, reliable and relatively inexpensive industrial-grade SSDs.

SuperMLC combines the advantages of chips made using SLC (one bit of information per cell) and MLC (two bits per cell) technologies. The fact is that MLC products are much cheaper and more capacious than SLC solutions, but they have a higher access time and approximately an order of magnitude less maximum number of rewrites.

In the case of SuperMLC, each cell does not store two data bits, like MLC, but only one, like SLC. This results in a twofold reduction in capacity compared to traditional MLC products, but brings the performance of flash drives closer to those of much more expensive SLC devices. In particular, it is claimed that the sequential write speed is four times faster than MLC, and the number of rewrite cycles reaches 30.

In other words, it becomes possible to create analogues of SLC products at a lower cost. The release of the new type of drives is planned to begin in 2016. Such solutions will be offered in different form factors - 2,5 inches (SSD510K), mSATA (MSA510), Half Slim SSD (HSD510) and M.2 (MTS460 & MTS860).
