Revolutionary nuclear fusion technology

02.03.2020

Startup HB11, created at the University of New South Wales, has applied for and received patents in the US, Japan and China. The company's technology uses lasers to run a nuclear fusion reaction in hydrogen and boron - ostensibly without the involvement of radioactive fuel. The secret is in the cutting-edge laser and, apparently, in the element of luck.

According to the developers, the laser does not heat the materials. Instead, it accelerates hydrogen to the point where it must collide with boron to start the reaction. "You can imagine that hydrogen is being used as a dart to hit a boron target. If that happens, a reaction is triggered," explains managing director Warren McKenzie.

If hydrogen still recombines with a boron particle, then as a result of the reaction, helium atoms are released, the absence of electrons in which indicates their positive charge - this is how electricity is obtained.

The laser itself plays an important role in the process. For four decades, physicists and chemists have been developing laser fusion technology, but it was only possible to implement it after 2018, when three scientists shared the Nobel Prize for the invention of a chirped pulsed laser. Thanks to chirped emitters, it was possible, for example, to develop ultra-precise laser surgery and take pictures of moving atoms.

The essence of the new invention is to completely replace the "obsolete" technologies of thermonuclear fusion, which require ultra-high temperatures.

"An environmentally friendly and absolutely safe fusion reactor can be placed in the heart of densely populated areas without the threat to the population that arises from the use of nuclear fission reactors. This means that such a nuclear power plant will be much cheaper and simpler than the reactors we are used to," says Professor Heinrich Hora , who owns the idea of using laser technology.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Orbital lunar probe LADEE crashed as planned 22.04.2014

The American orbital lunar probe LADEE officially ceased to exist after a collision at a speed of 5800 km / h with the lunar surface, which he had been studying since November last year. The destruction of the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer spacecraft was the planned and final milestone of NASA's current exploration program.

Initially, the duration of the mission, which included studying the composition of the lunar atmosphere and dust, was 100 days, but specialists from the American Space Agency decided to extend the study for another 28 days. After the end of the allotted time for LADEE, the spacecraft received a command to deorbit for a subsequent fall on the only satellite of the Earth.

Not at all a soft landing occurred on the far side of the Moon at the maximum distance from the place where evidence was left of the expedition members of the manned spacecraft of the Apollo series being on the lunar surface. At the moment, experts not only cannot accurately determine whether the 383-kg LADEE probe left significant traces on the lunar surface at the crash site, but also unambiguously say about the coordinates of its fragments.

It is possible that NASA would like to extend the probe's orbital lifespan as much as possible, given the fact that all of the hardware successfully withstood the lunar eclipse and the corresponding temperature drop that the hardware was not designed for. However, on April 18, 2014, the fuel level in the spacecraft tanks was at a minimum level, which prevented the mission from continuing.

It is worth noting that NASA criticized the Chinese space program and the launch of the Chane-3 probe with the Jade Rabbit lunar rover on board. According to American scientists, the exhaust of the Chane-3 engine, as well as the dust raised during the landing and subsequent movement of the lunar module on the surface, could greatly impede and even interfere with the scientific activities of their orbiting satellite.

LADEE was launched in September last year, and a total of about $280 million was spent on this lunar orbital exploration program. Using the orbital probe, data were obtained on various components of the lunar atmosphere and a two-way laser communication system with a satellite was tested instead of previously used radio waves.
