Named the most difficult year in the history of mankind

28.12.2019

Various studies have shown that the most difficult year for people was 536 AD, when a fog of unknown origin descended on Eurasia. According to historian Michael McCormick, this year can be considered a period worse than the plague of 1349.

536 can also be considered worse than 1918, when a strain of influenza arose that killed 100 million people. As the historian from Byzantium, Procopius of Caesarea, noted, the territory of Europe, the Middle East and Asia was covered with thick fog, which did not descend for 18 months. People lived for such a long period in twilight. More than one million people suffered from the cataclysm with a 100% probability.

To find out what really happened, scientists examined the ice from the Swedish glacier. He allowed to know that in 536 AD. A volcano has erupted in Iceland. Ashes enveloped the whole of Eurasia. The eruptions were repeated in 540 and 547, they significantly weakened the European economy for a century.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Controlling objects using air currents 04.05.2024

The development of robotics continues to open up new prospects for us in the field of automation and control of various objects. Recently, Finnish scientists presented an innovative approach to controlling humanoid robots using air currents. This method promises to revolutionize the way objects are manipulated and open new horizons in the field of robotics. The idea of controlling objects using air currents is not new, but until recently, implementing such concepts remained a challenge. Finnish researchers have developed an innovative method that allows robots to manipulate objects using special air jets as "air fingers". The air flow control algorithm, developed by a team of specialists, is based on a thorough study of the movement of objects in the air flow. The air jet control system, carried out using special motors, allows you to direct objects without resorting to physical ... >>

Purebred dogs get sick no more often than purebred dogs 03.05.2024

Caring for the health of our pets is an important aspect of the life of every dog owner. However, there is a common assumption that purebred dogs are more susceptible to diseases compared to mixed dogs. New research led by researchers at the Texas School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences brings new perspective to this question. A study conducted by the Dog Aging Project (DAP) of more than 27 companion dogs found that purebred and mixed dogs were generally equally likely to experience various diseases. Although some breeds may be more susceptible to certain diseases, the overall diagnosis rate is virtually the same between both groups. The Dog Aging Project's chief veterinarian, Dr. Keith Creevy, notes that there are several well-known diseases that are more common in certain breeds of dogs, which supports the notion that purebred dogs are more susceptible to disease. ... >>

Animal brains networked 27.07.2015

Scientists from Duke University (USA) have combined the brains of several monkeys into a real living computer that can perform specific tasks.

Neuroscientists have been working on bionic prosthetic interfaces that allow animals and humans to control the movement of limbs with the power of thought. To do this, the brains of three monkeys were connected to a computer, on the screen of which the movements of a robotic arm were displayed in real time.

By synchronizing their thoughts, the monkeys were able to force the limb to reach the target and receive a reward for it. Then the scientists made the task more difficult for the primates: each animal could control the movements of the manipulator in only one dimension.

Monkeys again managed to join forces and solve this problem, creating a complex structure, which scientists called the "brain" (Brainet). Then, in the course of further experiments, neurophysiologists decided to try to connect the brains not only to a computer, but also to each other.

Two pairs of electrodes were implanted in the areas of the cerebral cortex responsible for controlling movements in four rats for neurostimulation and recording of brain activity. The scientists then began sending electrical impulses and rewarding the animals for successfully synchronizing brain activity.

After ten "training" sessions, the rats learned to perform tasks successfully in 61% of cases. Scientists believe that the brain is able to synchronize with other brain signals, like a computer.

If the brains of several people can be connected in a similar way, then there is a chance that they will learn to exchange thoughts with each other without the help of speech. For now, neurophysiologists hope to use the "brain network" to more effectively use bionic prostheses.
